E39 M5 Cam Chain Tensioner Replacement
I have a 2002 E39 M5 with 97k miles. I have an engine tapping/knocking noise from bank 1. I don't seem to have any hesitations or power issues. I have replaced the main chain tensioner but the noise is still there. From digging on other forums it seems it could be the cam chain tensioner that is at fault. Has anyone had the cam chain tensioner replaced? I am looking for someone in Ireland that could help me diagnose and change the tensioner if required. Any recommendations?

Healyc, Valdas and Thomas Narusa are the people to talk to.
Has the car sat for any extended periods of time?

It will be a bit of a trek for you but try Bryan Grieves of Dungorkin Auto's in Claudy near Derry.
He is a well known BMW specialist in these parts and works on ///M cars regularly. He did all the engine upgrades on my E36 M3.
He runs an E39 M5 himself so he know them inside out especially.
Really decent fella to work with.

Thanks. It has sat for a while lately but it was making this noise before that. Are you thinking it could be a stuck lifter?

Mine had a noisy lifter on the right bank, went away after about 20 mins of use and it never came back.
Car hadn't really been used in 2 years

I don't think this is the issue. I have been using it the past week and it's still there. Only really noticeable at idle when the car has warmed up.

I'd say you're right, I hope it's nothing serious. Best of luck getting it sorted.
