Sounds like a timing chain tensioner.
Interesting. From doing some research on other forums that seems to be a common suggestion.
Any idea how much that might cost to fix? I will seek quotes of course but it would be good to have some frame of reference.
The other thing I've noticed is that the car is making a sort of metallic raspy noise between around 800-1000rpm, e.g. when taking off or reversing at low speeds. Not sure if it's related?
I hate to say it Mr Kane, but I think you do need to cut your losses at some point. Sounds like your 318 is more expensive to maintain than an M3.
Just buy the M3 already! Life’s too short :)
All cars are money pits, just get a price for work to be done, if you like the car keep it,
Exactly, you said you weren't in a position to buy a M3 yet so just spend a bit more on this car to tide you over.
Crude but easy way to check the chain. Get a small hook (even the top of a clothes hanger) and open the oil filler cap. Get the hook under the timing chain and try to move it upwards. If there is noticeable slack, you need a new chain.
I like the way you guys think. Is there any chance I could get you to explain this logic to my wife??
You're right I don't want to throw any more money at it if I can avoid it. Tbh this noise is less of a worry than the perpetual oil leak that I can't seem to find...
