F10 520d.....underpowered or not?
Somebody made a comment a while ago about the F10 520d being underpowered, and it got me thinking.
The 520d is now the most common BMW on the roads and a very popular car. The F10 is more comfortable than the e60 but its also a lot heavier. Has the new 520 become underpowered.
I have test driven them, and I have to say mated to the auto gearbox, its a bit of a slug. The 20d engine in a e92 is well powered but in the F10 I think its just not enough. Also the claimed fuel consumption is just a fantasy.
What are other peoples thoughts, and I realise that underpowered is a subjective thing.
RE: F10 520d.....underpowered or not?
Depends on what you're used to really . I have one and find it a lot livelier than my previous e60 520d . Yes they are a heavy car but thats not an issue unless you are really pushing on ! As for fuel consumption its the most economical car ive ever owned averaging 44mpg on the weekly commute/school run/ town driving and ive gotten over 60mpg average on a few runs from tralee to Dublin . Mine is a 520d m sport with the 8 speed automatic and its on 20"s . Im pretty happy with that . Yes I wish I had a 535 d but I can't see that happening due to costs . Anyway I get my speed and power kicks from motor bikes . So I can enjoy the comfort and refinement of the car instead .

I had a 525d as a loaner from BMW when they came out first, its was plenty fast. Drove a 520 estate when I was changing the X5 and even my wife though it was slow. I though it was just that car, but them somebody said that on here and it got me thinking.
I once has a e90 316i...oh by jasus that was underpowered, hills were a problem.

What year was the 525d ?
RE: F10 520d.....underpowered or not?
2010 i think, was brand new at the time

I've an e60 520d manual (early 166 one) and it feels a better (livelier) than a mates auto m sport (170) and a another mates f10 520.
Turbo spool up in them all is horrendous though. Will be getting a remap once time and funds allow.

What year is yours and what year is your mates?
The 177 engine is noticeably livelier than the 163 engine for some reason, I have both. A remap transforms the 163 engine in my opinion.

Interesting as I had a 08 520d 6 speed manual m sport on 19"s prior to the f10 and the f10 Is definitely a faster car .
