Thats a balls (what happened the seals) was there any sign it was going to happen? Did it the engine grenade or did it hydrolock the cylinders (fill them and the sump?)

I didn't investigate the seals, seen how bad the problem was and didn't need too. Yeah that cylinders were hydrolocked, with just the ignition on and dipstick out diesel pissed out through it.. it was a small be rough on a cold start but ran fine when are temperature, put it down to a failing injector but little did I know.
Fuel pressure is read off the pump with this engine instead of the fuel rail, if this was the case the engine would have been saved. Lesson learned.
would you not chance draining it out and putting in another pump from a breaker??
Usually if the pump shaft seals go it fills the sump or dilutes the oil and then it can ignite grenading the engine, but its rare in M57's - if it filled the cylinders it's like the injectors flooded down into the cylinders then the sump - did you notice it diluting oil before this?
I'm not saying I'm right but you suspecting an injector could have been closer to the mark - if it stuck open.......
The fact it pissed out with the ignition on and it not cranking the injector pump means the pre-supply pump (electric one under the floor) was charging the rail through the HP pump and with an open injector it would pour through as you described.. I think anyway!!
I'm nearly certain the rail pressure is monitored also, as when injectors are leaking back to tank to much, the first sign is a fall off in rail pressure (not pump pressure, or maybe they are classified as the same).
Sorry to hear about it anyway, great engines and a shame to see this happen.
To be honest I'm not really prepared to put the money into it, second hand pumps are quite expensive for what they are and I would only be buying myself into the same problem again down the road. I'd have to replace every seal/gasket and more than likely fit an injector if not three, then it would have to be tested as it's out of NCT now.
I even left it with a specialist (he spent 10 years in conlans I'm Limerick) as diesel engines wouldn't really be my strong point and he really wasn't impressed.
He maintained that fuel pressure was read off the pump in this engine (184hp) but the facelift engines (192 & 204hp) read it from the rail. He said it's only the 2nd one ever he's seen fail like this in +/- 15yrs experience.
I had done an oil change 3 weeks previous and hadn't noticed anything major wrong with it.
You wouldn't mind but I always went out of my way for good slightly more expensive diesel and oil, which is what sickens me the most.
I agree with what your saying about getting premium oil etc - did you change out the diesel filter lately out of interest? At least you have the e36 coupe, and a nice one at that!
Fair enough on the 184BHP one, could well be the case it reads from the pump - I was referring to the 192 version alright.
If you do decide to part it out, I might be interested in the steering wheel if it hasn't worn through anywhere past the shiny finish. PM me a price if it's an option. Only need the bare rim really, have the other bits.
Yeah done 2 major services in 14 months, every filter changed.
Thank you very much! It's been off the road for over a year, doing too much mileage with a new job and wanted to get a few bits done to it. Although I had bought an e36 saloon for the daily duty but ended up warping a wishbone (have to love winter eh) last week so I've been driving the coupe since. Never misses a beat!
It's officially for breaking, whatever you need shoot me a pm.
Sorry about the late/lack of replies lads, been very ill for the last few weeks been in and out of hospital. I really do apologize to anyone who has tried to contact me I know how frustrating it can be. For now there won't be much coming off the car as I haven't found proper storage for it and I just don't have the energy at the moment. Thanks for your time.
Is it 5 or 6 speed?
