Why do they need washers anyway ?
This rule is not new, here's the extract from the NCT manual from May 2012:
NOTES
4. HID headlamps must be installed as a complete type-approved system. The system will include automatic cleaning. HID headlamps can be recognised by:
a) the light having a bluish tinge,
b) the light taking a few seconds to reach full intensity,
c) the headlamp having an igniter module/inverter behind the headlamp,
d) the headlamp having ”DC” (for HID dipped beam), “DR” (for HID main beam), or “DCR” (if both are HID) marked on the lens. This marking should be visible from the exterior of the vehicle but in some cases the markings may be hidden under the bonnet and this may need opening to obtain a clear view.
HID Lamps:
16 Automatic headlamp levelling device not operating or manual headlamp levelling device cannot be operated from driver’s seat.
17 Mandatory headlamp cleaning device not present.
18 Mandatory headlamp cleaning device not operating.
I agree with this rule but it does affect me as I fitted xenons. Can the E39 bulbs be swapped to the halogen type?
Will affect you Mick as you've no self level adjuster. Have never gone from factory xenon to halogen type bulbs on a Xenon head lamp but should be able to do something.Quote:

lot people has retrofitted xenon ,but the point is ,some headlights are not made to run these bulbs ,they cant adjust the focus .for example E39 headlights are universal ones ,they can be run with and without xenon, but for the rules xenon ones should have washers and automatic adjustment unit .
Ok thanks Conor, luckily I still have my old lights so not the end of the world.Quote:

Jeeze I got lucky then the other week as I coded off my headlight washers last year and never re-enabled for the test but still passed, whew!
Is it possible to retrofit the washers and self level?.i retrofitted oem xenon and would rather keep them if I could.
Yep you can retrofit..you'll need a different washer bottle though AFAIK..and im guessing the self levelling wouldnt be too hard bar some wiringQuote:
