If I want in your position (and I have been), I'd recommend doing 2 nights a week in CityWest somewhere, rent a room. That will save a shed load of miles (and fatigue) each week. Also for social occasions or late working nights you'll have somewhere to crash.
Otherwise there are two options: drive what you have and watch it pile on the miles or sell and buy a soul destroying commuter box like a Focus diesel or similar, choose something that the local mechanics in Kilkenny see every day so they are familiar with them. Than get something fun for the weekend. Although with long commutes during the week you'll be allergic to driving at the weekend.
Thanks for the advice Mark :) Funny thing is, I dont see 75 miles each way that bad, considering it 95% of it will be motorway. It means I can have a very decent house in Kilkenny, opposed to a flat in Dublin or surrounding areas. The fact I can stagger my hours is awesome. I stress this to mates that think I'm mental, I did an hour every day to go 7 miles to Clontarf for 2.5 years!
"soul destroying commuter box" is where the dilemma lies!:)
Vintage car for the weekend, cheap tax and insurance so that'd take the sting off it sitting in the garage most of the time, Sierra RS Cosworth, have E30's M3's hit 30 yet? Something that's appreciating in value would be nice, even an old air cooled 911 is the budget stretched to it
Here's a milemuncher example for you. CC based road tax aside, its an approach to mile munching that limits your downside risk of depreciation, probably without having to shorten you 4-5 year time view. http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classifi...at_cars&page=1
Same idea, more palatable road tax http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classifi...had=New&page=1
I've been drawn to the idea of getting a barge to handle the commute. Quiet, refined and arrive in comfort. This brought me to F10s, but the more I look at it, if I'm taking this route, surely an F01 7 series makes more sense? For 25k I'd import a decent 5/6 yr 7er, with this barge I dont know if msport is worth it? Premium for it, taking about 5 odd k judging uk prices.
Online is saying comfort seats and nappa leather are the goto treats?
Lots of questions and ideas, joys of not being under pressure :) This will be my most thought out car :D
I used do that drive regularly when I was living in KK working as a consultant. Not a harsh road at all on a car but I'd still get something as mentioned like a small diesel for the commute. I love my cars, and I love driving them. We all want to keep the miles down if possible but I hate driving long distances when it's work related.
I had an F10 and there made for doing the miles, my was only a 520 but the buddy had a 535 and it's thirsty. So for me the bigger engine is wasted when it's going to be used primarily for the commute to work. I'd have a little run around for the commute and something nice for the weekends. You won't be worried then about the mileage or stone chips etc associated with doing the higher miles. I used get ticked off for every new stone chip I spotted going into work.
I regularly go up and down from Dublin to Kilkenny in the e70 x5
Perfect wafting mobile.. 3.0d inline 6 so lots and lots of torque
Downside is the fuel economy - motorway cruising gets mid 20's mpg. About 500 miles from a tank when not in the city (economy is worse there).
Considering its 100 euro to fill.... It ain't cheap on fuel. Probably should have bought that Cayenne 4.8S :-)
Hard to get an x5 without intergalactic mileage but the pre 3.0sd ones have the M57 engine (I think) so bullet proof engine. Even ones with 150k+ miles are frequently for sale
Like the idea of a 7 series though... You need the big displacement engine for motorway cruising. Our (161) 320d is just harsh and noisy on long motorway drives... You definitely need the bigger engines for refinement
Another left field idea is the 5 series GT - if you can live with the looks. Basically a 7 series interior in a 5
My dad has one (in white) and while I don't like it - he loves it...
