It happened to me last year.
First up, it was a fair cop and I deserved the collar, that said it was an expensive day.
Got stopped in swords , had one of the lads bring me to Ballymun to get the tax , this is where my meter started clicking.......
Pay the arrears
Pay the next three months
Taxi to sentry Garda station to get approved stamp
Taxi to from santry to lusk (there's some kudos here to the driver for being gentle on the bill)
Into the impound lot - they do not take laser BTW
Pay the impound fee
Kept smiling the whole time as it was only my fault , and it cost me about 700e for that smile.

RE: PLEASE READ: Off the road declaration/SORD
Question.
If a car has been off the road for a few months and has not been declared off the road but is then sold, Will the previous off the road term have to be paid or declared by the original/previous owner ?
-
RE: PLEASE READ: Off the road declaration/SORD
a lot of guys are transferring ownership of the car from themselves to someone else to avoid paying back tax (if they forogt to do the declaration). So that means that the back tax is no longer applicable for the new owner. I dont; think the motor tax system is smart enough (yet) to go after the previous owner for back tax after a car is sold. Only a matter of time though.

RE: PLEASE READ: Off the road declaration/SORD

I collected the car this morning just had to go to the station and show my license and insurance/log book documents they gave me a release form for the impound yard, the recovery driver was actually in the cop station so he gave me a lift to his yard and i paid €125 release fee and i was on my way....no need to show tax for the car....the system in place is really flawed if you look at it this way my car tax for the year costs €1500 if i dont tax the car and it gets seized 4 times a year it will only cost €125 a time to get it back so €500 for a year..i will be taxing it this week anyway..but just for future reference if anyone else's car gets seized..

I'm going to transfer the car into a family members name and then I'll tax it, it's not ideal but I'll avoid the 3 months arrears.

Don't think you will get away with that now that you got it taken off you?? Should they not see a tax disc before its released? Stupid system...

I'm not too sure I'll give it a go anyway see what happens, yeah I agree it is a stupid system but as long as you have insurance and nct all you have to pay is the €125 release fee and you get the car back, you don't have to show you've taxed it.

Tax it ASAP and you won't get caught for back tax as the system isn't that up to date. It happened to me and I just taxed it as soon as I had the car out.
-
RE: PLEASE READ: Off the road declaration/SORD
How do you do that? The online system asks for arrears doesn't it?

When I got caught I went up the very next morning at 9am got my car out on a trailer got it outside the impound yard took it off the trailer drove it up to the tax office taxed it and there was no arrears. I figured in the timeframe that in which it was taken and I got it back that whatever system is used wasn't updated. The girl in the impound didn't even charge me any storage fee as I was there bang on 9am. I got charged the impound that was it.

RE: PLEASE READ: Off the road declaration/SORD
Weird, I've a car that's one month out and the system knows I'm due arrears.

I say you just got lucky or something,i was in the cop station at 9am to get the release form and i drove the car out of the impound yard around 10am,now i just checked online and i still owe the arrears.
And you only get charged the storage fee if its been there for over 24hrs.

Maybe I was lucky but it 100% did happen I most certainly wasn't complaining. It did do one thing tho and that was teaching to keep the car taxed at all times as it's just not worth the hassle.

Yeah im the same i will be taxing it this week but to be honest it wasnt any hassle for me,i got stopped in a checkpoint at 8pm and the car was on the truck at around 8:30pm,then the guard even gave me a lift home by 9pm,i was in the cop station at 9am and the guard there gives me the release form and says to me "the recovery truck driver is outside collecting a car if you hold on he will give you a lift over to collect your car" ,so much for needing a trailer or tow ha ha

Simple answer, Yes.

RE: PLEASE READ: Off the road declaration/SORD
If a car is declared off the road for the full year is it possible to say tax it from the start of this month?

Yep you can break the declaration at any time, and tax it from the 1st day of the month in which you broke it.
E.g. If you declared the car off the road in August for 12 months and decided today that you want to tax it again, you will have to tax the car from the 1st of December going forward for 3/6/12 months.

RE: PLEASE READ: Off the road declaration/SORD
So I bought my car in November, but I won't be driving it until January earliest, possibly even February. I just realised after seeing this thread, that I'll owe 2-3 months road tax by then without ever driving it!!! Is there any way I can avoid this because there's no way I want to pay over €200 for absolutely nothing. Would have been grand in the old system, I just totally forgot about the new way of doing things.
-
RE: PLEASE READ: Off the road declaration/SORD
Sell it to a family member and buy it back in january

RE: PLEASE READ: Off the road declaration/SORD
Dope that I am I have a car declared off the road and now have forgotten when I started the year. They don't send a notification email online to say this is done. Normally have it saved as a draft. Anyway my question is: Is there a way to check this online say via a reg or a vin or will I have to call someone with a reg? Thanks lads.

RE: PLEASE READ: Off the road declaration/SORD
^ I get my renewals in the post. (During the month of expiry)
Maybe you can try a PIN retrieval on the Motortax site? Might be able to see the SORD expiry if you try SORD it again (If that makes sense!)
But yes stupid system, Should be a section there to simply check NCT and Tax/SORD expiry on the site.
-

As Ross says do a pin retrieval and you can get into the site. Happened to me earlier in the year
