Diagnostics: Mobile App! Carly for BMW
Diagnostics are a must for any DIYer these days in order to avoid spending money needlessly replacing parts or guessing wrong.
There are lots of alternative solutions like INPA, DIS or ISID. These are all really great for diagnostics but sometimes you just need something much more convenient and easy to use.
There are generic code readers available but the Carly for BMW app & WiFi dongle is BMW specific and goes in to way more detail and allows you to complete service resets, coding and more besides.
There is also a VAG, Mercedes & Porsche version.

Use the discount code for both the App and the dongle purchase.
This app started out being call BMWhat and I bought it a while back as a back up diagnostic solution to my back up diagnostics solution! I find now that I usually just plug this in first as its good enough in most cases!
It covers every module in the BMW and now they gave recently announced coverage back as far as the e36! (When using their Gen 2 wifi dongle).
There is both an Apple and Android version of the app. While it's not a cheap app and the dongle is also a few quid it probably still comes in cheaper than some genetic code readers that have limited functionality.
Below are some screen shots showing some of the views in the app.

As you can see from above there are new features added to the App including Battery Registration, Service item reset and DPF regeneration.
There is also some (limited) coding functionality depending on the model of car that you're plugged in to. They are adding functionality all the time and the F Series of cars is also covered.
The interesting news is that the people at Carly (for BMW and soon Merc plus VW!) have contacted me to me an evangelist and trainer for the app in return for access to Beta versions of their products and the means to provide input to the next versions!
So what's in it for you guys?
Well, I have been given a discount code that gives €5 off the price of the WiFi dongle. Simply enter the code below in to the website at checkout when buying the dongle.

I'll add to this as I discover more!
EDIT: Since I originally posted this thread the application has undergone a complete overhaul so I decided to update the screenshots.

The Dongle only supports 2007 cars and up is it? I'd have to get the cable for an E39?

Hey, the dongle supports 2001 cars and upwards. If your car has the large round diagnostic port under the bonnet then you also need the cable. In the e39 this changed in the face lift models.

I have it, got it when I had the e92. Fault clearing & diagnosis is pretty comprehensive.
For coding it has the option which can be turned on/off easily eg: Key coding, unlocking beeps etc, welcome lights etc, digital speedo display, seatbelt warning, auto lock on drive off etc etc

RE: Diagnostics: Mobile App! Carly for BMW
how much is it working out at? about €100 all in?

The App comes in at: ~€44
The dongle (Generation 2): €49.90 (with the €5 discount)
The Adapter for round pin connector: €9.90 (only needed for 2001 or older cars)
Dongle delivery to Ireland €8.90
So it is about €100 - 110 all in. Not cheap, but a generic code reader is about €50 but doesn't cover any module beyond the DME (engine management).
This app is very easy to use compared to the INPA/DIS/ISID, however it doesn't have some of the drill down & guided troubleshooting that DIS/ISID has.
Coding Options:
As John has said most of the Car Key Memory functions are code-able using the Carly app. From what I have seen is that the coding feature range is model dependent with the e9x having the broadest range with e6x close behind. However as you can see from the first image new coding capability is being added with each release, this version added e36, e34, e46, 39, etc.
Additional point: I had a vLink WiFi dongle with the app initially and the coding function didn't always work. Also, I think as functionality is added the requirement for the "official" Generation 2 dongle.

Will do, thanks!

RE: Diagnostics: Mobile App! Carly for BMW
I bought this too - badly needed to know when to return the car for warranty work on misfires ;)
As mine is a 2007 car I got the cable and dongle - needless to say the cable is sitting idle in my glovebox.

Yep, it is INPA in your pocket, the descriptions are just a bit shorter and don't tell you the mileage at which the fault occurred at. Outside of that it does everything else. As mentioned above, if you want to try it just let me know.

Just put in my order for this:

Will pick up the app when it arrives and start having a fiddle with the cars :smiling:

RE: Diagnostics: Mobile App! Carly for BMW
Just so you know, they use the slowest parcel mail to ship the dongle. It will get there though. Just a word of warning for those on a hurry for one.

In no rush anyway! Thought I would have received a tracking number by now though :tounge:

All I can say is that it was worth waiting for in my case..
Car is going in next week for misfires on all cylinders and a suspected timing chain rattle...
Thank God for BMW warranty

Did you get the Android version? Wouldn't mind having a look at that. It's a handy piece of kit alright. Although I am a little annoyed at all this in app purchase malarkey that seems to be creeping in. Then again it is nice to see the capability grow and grow.

I did indeed, find it very good so far anyway, menu is a bit clunky but it's simple to use. Coded a few things like lock/unlock noises, alarm type, US Sidemarkers, lock when moving etc.

what would this do on a e36?
-
RE: Diagnostics: Mobile App! Carly for BMW
It will cover all modules on the e36 now they the new module is available. You will need the OBD to 20 pin adapter cable.
I'm not 100% on the coding capabilities but it is limited for the e36 in any case. Even with NCS Expert.

Hi Mark, for Android I need this right? http://www.ivini-tech.de/en/adapter/...er-bmw/a-1017/
Appears out of stock? Will the above discount code work with it?
-
Hi Eddie, yep that's the best one for coding F Series and diagnosing K CAN cars (pre 03/2007) as well as D-CAN cars (after 03/2007). I'd hold out for it to be back in stock. Yes the discount code will work.
If you only plan to use it to do diagnostics and not coding on cars after 03/2007 then you can also use the Gen 1 adapter, it's more limited than the Gen 2 one you linked to:

Thanks Mark, will hold out, do you know if they typically do be out of stock for long?
Since I upgraded to windows 10 or installed e-sys on the laptop cannot get dis to work, unless cable is all of a sudden faulty. Not had time to investigate so want to use this a quick workaround.

That sounds like an Ediabas version issue. E-Sys needs a newer version than works with DIS.

Tried Carly today on e39. I used Samsung Galaxy tab with inpa d+k-can cable and micro usb to usb a adapter.
I had crack in the intake boot and car was running lean. I scanned for codes before replacing the boot. Cleared codes after fitting new boot and scanned again after short drive.
All worked great.
There is also a digital garage function. This allows you keep history about all the scans you have performed and add notes to each scan. It is web based and accessible from any device.
When you enable digital garage, all scan results are automatically saved to it when you perform a scan.
There is possibility to code some functions in lcm and gm5.
I need to test it with e36 one day.

Android adapter back in stock so ordered today.

I had registered to be notified when back in stock but that never happened...so lucky I was periodically checking the site.
