Looking at getting something cheap and cheerful for doing some basic error reading and coding. Is the Carly still the best / handiest device to go for? Or what else are folk using.
Models that I'll be using it on E39 / E36 / F25 / E90

I went with INPA, couple of different cables and you’re good to go
If it's just basic fault finding, Carly is the way to go. I have used it a good bit lately, and it's great for monitoring live values via the phone (especially if you have a phone holder in the car!) Carly is now available for other car brands too which I now have access to.
With the Carly, is it a case of pay for the device, app is free and then you have to pay to unlock some in app features? What kind of money are those?
Reading that BimmerCode is a one off payment of £28. Anyone any experience using that?
Is INPA a laptop based system?? How easy is it to operate?
Ideally just looking for the handiest of the phone.
Yes INPA is laptop based
ESys and a enet cable is probably your best best for the "F" series, although I have both and never set it up! ;) Found the coding in Carly great but the error code reading not so much. DIS was great for the E92 for fault finding.
Carly is now €45 or so per year and I find since the last update I can’t access the e46.
Besides Carly option which is OK for basic coding etc. If you get a OBD2 cable there is a free version of BMW logger which enables you to get all the codes and do some minimal clearing.
Otherwise I would suggest to buy an virtual box image of windows with all diagnostic tools for like 6 euro. No messy install or getting some rubbish laptop of ebay. Just install Virtual box on whatever laptop you have and mount an image. Took me 5 min to set everything up and have all bmw diagnostic tools running.
When did you buy yours John? If it's before March 2018, you shouldn't have to pay the annual fee... https://www.mycarly.com/migration/
