E92 335i / Late E46 M3 possibly..
I'm looking for a car to hop in and drive, must not need anything done now or in the foreseeable future, I plan to hold on to it for a while so LOW MILEAGE is essential and warranty is a major bonus.
E92: Sat Nav and Sunroof is all I ask for, I'm ok with the lack of anything else.
E46 M3: it must have the subframe sorted and evidence of the car generally being babied throughout its' life.
Budget is around 13k
This is pretty much exactly what I have in mind but it's sold unfortunately.

I've genuinely never been someone who cared about the reg (and still don't) I'm just traumatised from the e36 and just don't want to get the usual "sure it's an old car" or "it has 100k what do you expect" lines everytime something goes wrong with it. There is no mechanics I trust nearby here and I don't want to be up and down to Cab every other week getting something done which won't be cheap on an M3... So that's why I'm looking for as new, and as low a mileage a car I can get as well as being well maintained.

Re: E92 335i / Late E46 M3 possibly..
In my opinion and from what I have seen for sale regarding late e46 M3s then the mileage is working out for between a '04 - '06 ranging from 95k miles to 126k miles and are still commanding a price of 12.5 - 15k euro. Average miles on an e92 from '07-'08 you're looking at between 85k to 100k miles. You have already mentioned a low miler you were looking at sold on Saturday so your options are compromise on older model with higher mileage or sacrifice the sunroof and buy an average mile e92 and/or stump up the vrt to import one from UK with the mileage, spec, colour you desire. Bear in mind the road tax on an e46 M is 1809 as well and more than likely will require tax from your date of purchase.
A sunroof wouldn't be high on my list of priorities but I'd suggest drive as many variants of both M3 and e92 and decide which is going to be more usable on a day to day basis!

RE: E92 335i / Late E46 M3 possibly..
Just to reiterate what's been said about the E46 M's, forget about the year and buy on condition. I'd also look at the spec on them as things that are nice to have but are not necessary nor the reason for buying an M :)
At the end of the day if you're buying a car with 80-100k miles on it, it will be getting to the stage that things will need to be replaced on them, especially if you're using it as a daily driver.
-
RE: E92 335i / Late E46 M3 possibly..
I would certainly look at condition, just not condition alone, likewise I wouldn't get a late model with low mileage that was neglected.
I like how raw the e46 M3s are, but also like the refinement of the e92. I guess what I'd really like is an e92 M3 but till then it's an E92 335i or E46 M3 :p

The one in Beshoff's has another 18 months warranty on it. Peace of mind there and even if you only kept it the 18 months, you'd have ticked it off the list of cars to own.

I keep going on carzone, doing the same search, opening the ad and staring at it.
Peace of mind is what you're buying there for sure! But no sat nav or sunroof and much prefer the style 230s, 78k too which means a couple of years and it will be 100k and more difficult to shift. 13,950 is def good considering the warranty but is more than similar cars. I can't help but think there's a better one/deal to be had somewhere.
M3 looks good, how difficult is it to import a car actually? Don't know anything about the process..

http://m.carzone.ie/used-cars/BMW-3-Series-335-TWIN-TURBO-M-SPORT-WITH-LOW-MILEAGE--Fresh-2yrs-NCT/201445228449820
Spoke to the owner, water pump and thermostat walere done along with the coil packs and brakes. New tyres although the alloys are in tatters and one is welded.
Original fuel pump, injectors and turbos. It's now @~70k.
No warranty but he will do a pretty good deal. Thoughts? There will be spare change for possible surprises. But would it be better to hold out for the right one to pop up in Beshoff's or the like with warranty? I can't quite put my finger on it but although it's been maintained well I get the impression that it didn't have an easy life / that it isn't the trouble free car that I'm after..
Definitely want to take a closer look at it but it's a bit awkward with work, seeing as it's in Dublin : /

Could be wrong but don't think that's an M-Sport. Steering wheel doesn't have the M logo and thumb grips and also looks like the head-lining isn't right either!

Definitely not M-Sport, no m-sport till 2007. SE with sport suspension, seats and kit.

Headliner, dechrome and steering wheel and it will be a sport

Re: E92 335i / Late E46 M3 possibly..
It's weird that on realOEM they have the shadow line external trim priced cheaper than that brushed aluminum! Wonder if it is actually cheaper and what it costs here to get!

This is true.
So question is, is the 3k price difference between it and the one in Beshoff's set aside for surprises the equivalent of a warranty? I can imagine something like the turbos would eat into that big time!
-
RE: E92 335i / Late E46 M3 possibly..
I'd be paying the extra with the warranty on a car like that..my cousin's 2011 335i with 10k on the clock had some pretty costly work done under warranty, so isn't always higher mileage cars that go wrong.
I can't see you buying a kitted up SE, don't think your OCD would cope! Don't forget the Beshoff's one is a year newer too

This was the case on the e46 e39 etc but the fact it has all the sport suspension and original front and rear bumpers id class this car as a sport if the remaining 2 or 3 pieces were fitted
The suspension, bumpers and seats are the most exspensive so another couple of hundred and it would be no different to a sport from the factory
-
Re: E92 335i / Late E46 M3 possibly..
If you change your car, will you be looking at changing the wheels? If so then you'll need tyres too, depending on the brand of both you could be looking at a couple of grand! So if you're willing to spend that on wheels and tyres and doing a bit of mod'ing then just buy one and drive it for 6 months before mod'ing. Put off buying the few bits in case something drastic happens! My point is, you're probably going to be spending money on changing something anyway, so just do the turbo's and get the mods done later! Failing that keep an eye out for a 325 with the 3.0 non-turbo they put out about 265hp.
It's like buying a new smartphone or pc....... Every few months there's a new one and if you don't just take the plunge and get one then you're always going to be thinking of something like what-if all the time!

Pretty sure the N52 3.0 in the 325i puts out 218 bhp
-
RE: E92 335i / Late E46 M3 possibly..
Not at all Paddy, agree 100% :) I dont want to do anything to the car actually mods or otherwise :p I'm just thinking is cash put aside an equivalent to a warranty. Warranty is certainly better I'd say!
I think it'll have to be 335i or nothing. 325 or 330 won't cut the mustard I'm afraid :D
@Don I actually like the SE on the 335s it has a certain "je ne sais quoi" about it :p I just want my sat Nav and sunroof.
I'm gonna keep my eyes peeled over the next while and see what comes up. Hopefully something that ticks all the boxes will surface!
-
RE: E92 335i / Late E46 M3 possibly..
Another +1 for a se over the sport in this case, think there much nicer. As for cash over warranty, I think I'd go cash, a lot of these expensive horror stories are from people both buying expensive oe from dealer or going to dealer to get stuff fixed, I know that's not always the case but if you have a good mechanical knowledge or have a good Indy I'd prefer that to a safety net of what if's
-
RE: E92 335i / Late E46 M3 possibly..
I dunno..I'd 100% go for an M Sport over an SE, obviously depending on condition etc, spec is usually better. The later 335i's especially have a great spec, all the bits thrown in.
As for the warranty..I'd say a pair of turbos on one of these would be eye wateringly expensive...so I'd really want the warranty.
-
RE: E92 335i / Late E46 M3 possibly..
Another day another fruitless search... :(
I keep coming back to the one in Beshoff's: ( http://www.carzone.ie/used-cars/bmw/3-series/used-2007-bmw-3-series-335i-coupe-dublin-fpa-93414135741647330 ) looks really clean and nice to have the warranty for peace of mind but they really don't come much more basic than that.. Sports interior and suspension are standard, and I imagine aircon can't be an option in this day an age can it? There's nothing else! :p Don't want to invest in a car that'll be 100k+ miles in 2 years time either... I know condition is more important but tell that to a prospective buyer when trying to shift a 100k+ 3 Litre twin turbo paddy spec car privately in a couple of years...
@Don: I never thought I'd say it, but I would genuinely prefer an SE 335i over a sport, only the 335 though! Oh and I'd definitely prefer the warranty too...
