E39 suspension refresh
As my car is old and done 142000 miles, it is time for suspension refresh.
Some of the parts have been replaced over time, but most is original. So plan is to replace most of it. Only front upper control arms will remain old, as i replaced them about 10000 miles ago. And i am not sure about eibach anti roll bar kit yet.
I made up a list of some sort. I have added prices and places where i was planning to buy. If anyone has some recommendations, please let me know.

E39 suspension refresh
Might as well do the sub frame bushes while you're at it
-
Re: E39 suspension refresh
Eibach prokit 150 euro delivered to door from ebay.de ;-)
Save yourself 87e
May aswell do complete track rods is well while in there and as dave suggests above definitely worth doing
Be worth asking keanes for a quote is well on everything bar the shocks they might be able to give +15% off as its a big order
-
RE: E39 suspension refresh
get a quote from super4,cab is sound and with such a big order he probably beat them prices and save you a fortune..so much money..
-
RE: E39 suspension refresh
Thanks Dave and Gar.
Added them to the list.
I will send an email to Frank Keane and see what they will offer me.
I will keep the list updated with prices, if i find better ones. It will help me to keep track where to buy and what and hopefully, if someone plans an upgrade themselves, it would serve as some sort of guide price.

RE: E39 suspension refresh
Eibach anti rollbar kit is in the plan now, as i just bought it. :D
-
RE: E39 suspension refresh
Have you done the engine mounts? I got mine done at around that mileage and it improved the ride a lot.
-
E39 suspension refresh
If you're doing the engine mounts, which are next on my list, do the vacuum lines
-
RE: E39 suspension refresh
Thanks kaveman. I will add engine mounts to the list
@Dave - Do you know what diameter vacuum lines are needed for engine mounts?
-
RE: E39 suspension refresh
-
RE: E39 suspension refresh
Can't see myself ever selling it :D
-
RE: E39 suspension refresh

I don't know, I could find out which one fits my car but I would be concerned that they are different as I know the diesel and petrol mounts are different.
My intention is just to buy them from the dealer, they're bound to be buttons

Being a high miles petrol 3lt old car, the car is basically worthless in Irish market. So why not to keep it, it is a good car and this investment will keep it going for a long time. I am just hoping, that in 20 years time, i can show up in a meet with the same car still driving. :D

I have whole bunch of different sizes of vacuum hoses in a box somewhere, it is probably easier to pop one off and see what fits.

RE: E39 suspension refresh
All parts bought. Waiting for delivery now.
-
Re: E39 suspension refresh
Postmans back will broke delivering this one [emoji1]
-
RE: E39 suspension refresh
I'm thinking of doing something similar in the next month where did you buy it all from?
-
RE: E39 suspension refresh
In the first post, i have after each item where it was bought and how much it costs. If there is only BMW after the item, it means from main dealer.
In summary, items were from BMW dealer, ebay.de, www.c3bmw.co.uk, www.mister-auto.ie and www.micksgarage.ie.
-
RE: E39 suspension refresh
Cheers, did you buy off any particular seller on ebay.de?
-
RE: E39 suspension refresh
I was just looking for cheapest seller with good feedback.
I used http://stores.ebay.ie/AZE-Hammelburg-Shop?_trksid=p2047675.l2563 for anti roll bar.
http://stores.ebay.ie/hs-autoteile?_trksid=p2047675.l2563 for springs
and http://stores.ebay.ie/brands4cars?_trksid=p2047675.l2563 for shocks.

RE: E39 suspension refresh
It's nearly all here now. Only one trackrod is missing.
Now i need to find time and get tools i need to fit it all. :D

RE: E39 suspension refresh
What size are the roll bars ? What bushings do you use with them
-
RE: E39 suspension refresh
Anti roll bars are 27 mm front and 18 mm rear from Eibach. Bushes came in the kit.
-
RE: E39 suspension refresh
Small update then.
Replaced subframe bushes today. It's easy enough with the right tool.
Also i left the bushes into freezer overnight.
Old bushes looked not too bad when i took them out. 142k miles on them.

Tool i used. Tool itself is quite expensive and i only used it this one time.

RE: E39 suspension refresh
Got a bit more done. Rear anti rollbar, shocks and upper control arms are out.
Shocks and top mounts were long gone, same goes for the arb drop links.
Arb bushes were showing signs of wear also.
Both control arms are looking ok.
Springs are rusty.
Couple of pics then.
Sport vs. eibach arb
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-K...ustom%2529.JPG
mtech II vs Eibach pro kit springs. They have about the same thickness, but eibach has more coils and is slightly longer. I wonder, will this reflect in ride hight when fitted?
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-y...ustom%2529.JPG
mtech II vs. Sachs advantage shock. They look identical, only difference i noticed was, that original shock had 16mm top nut, but Sachs has 17mm.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-N...ustom%2529.JPG
Crack in the top mount.

RE: E39 suspension refresh
Interesting on the spring looks like it will higher it up just a fraction
-
E39 suspension refresh
Don't forget that the older springs will have fatigued. Mine looked like it was mocking an x5 when I had my springs first fitted but it settled nicely.
-
RE: E39 suspension refresh
True was just thinking that after i posted the others have had 1500kg sitting on them for 12 years , my eibachs didnt fully settle until after about a month
The rear should be pretty much identical to factory ride height
What is the drop all round on msport 2 suspension dave ? Is it 15mm all round
-
E39 suspension refresh
Yup, 15mm all round. It's the front that you'll notice the big difference with the eibachs.
-
RE: E39 suspension refresh
I was starting to worry, that i am turning the car into x5 :D
-
RE: E39 suspension refresh
All done now.
On the front. Shocks were gone, arb links were gone too and one ball joint.
Engine mounts looked tired.
Last item was front arb.
old vs. new.
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-K...ustom%2529.JPG
and finally.
Everything old vs. new.

RE: E39 suspension refresh
No. It is nearly the same as before. Front is maybe slightly lower.
I have no arch liners in front. There is some rust that needs to be addressed.

RE: E39 suspension refresh
Say its great to drive now. Nice job and a lovely car to match the work
-
RE: E39 suspension refresh
I went for quick drive, it is day and night, compared what it was before.
I need to get it tracked now, steering wheel is way off center. :D
-
