Is this bad form or not?

I needed to replace an MV2 on my e46 and my mechanic recommended a motor factor/breaker type place that specialises in BMW parts.

I rang them up, asked if they had an 18” front MV2 and they said they did. I drove to them a few hours later and bought the wheel. I was in a rush because I had to do this on my lunch break, so I didn’t inspect the wheel as closely as I should have.

It turns out the wheel is a replica, which I only realised when I tried to fit it and found the centre cap from my previous wheel wouldn’t fit, and then noticed the wheel had no markings on the inside.

Obviously it was my responsibility to check the wheel before buying it, but I thought it was reasonable for me to assume that when I asked if they had “an MV2 wheel” that I didn’t mean a replica of an MV2 wheel.

Was this bad form from them, or just naivety from me?

Depends on what happened/happens when you informed them its a replica ? Maybe they didn't know and will take it back or have a genuine one you can exchange it for.

You should also be careful of the offset when your buying an Mv2. E46 and E60 are different.

I haven’t told them yet as I only realised this yesterday and they’re closed at the weekend! Good to get some views first too just to make sure I’m not being completely unreasonable!

u didn't checked your self ,because of your own reasons and now u haven't asked them yet ,about mistake ,and already spread this on internet . how about check yourself before u pay money for something .its life ,it does happens ... and if they are not total cow boys , they will take it back ,but how would feel u if somebody tells u after few days, I bought something I don't like .

In my opinion I’d say it’s your own fault for not questioning wether it’s original or not and for not checking.

From the sellers point of view, you came looking for a wheel, they sold you a wheel. Original wheels and replica wheels mean nothing to 99% of punters so why would he get into that conversation with everyone that gets in touch looking for some.

To be fair, I deliberately didn’t name the seller, so I’m not exactly spreading anything on the internet, just trying to canvass views.

I totally get that argument. But the flip side of it is, I came looking for a specific wheel and didn’t say anything to suggest a replica of that wheel would suffice! I believe it’s not black and white and arguable either way, which is the reason for asking the question in the thread...

But you know replica wheels are out there on the used market, you could have had your eyes open but you didn’t. It’s a little 50/50 here, answering your question from the title of the thread: no I don’t think it’s necessarily bad form on the sellers part.

most breakers will not take any attention to this ,but as it was bmw independent specialists , they could take more attention .but again, its what people are looking for

Yeah as above it's hard to say, particularly because people don't seem to sell individual wheels very often, but I would say based on what people seem to be asking for a full set of genuine MV2s on DoneDeal and Adverts and considering the condition of the wheel, I definitely paid genuine money.

It sounds like a fairly simple misunderstanding to me. Assumptions made and details not checked to catch it at the point of occurrence. I'd hope that the seller would be a gentleman about it, but at the end of the day it doesn't look like he has any obligation, its a case of "Caveat Emptor". It doesn't sound like the seller misrepresented anything when there was no question asked regarding it being original.

Seller may be apprehensive, what’s to stop you bringing back a rep and they sold you an original without knowing, is it marked as an item from them?

If seller is apprehensive,hit him with it across the head,the sound alone should tell him its a replica.

I'd say all depends on the price if you paid any less than 100 then it's not bad form IMO

Breakers can & do make honest mistakes. It's unlikely they would clean off 15 years of baked on brake dust to ensure there's a genuine p/n stamped on the wheel...

I've returned a couple of items (faulty fuel pump that worked fine when they bench tested it but was failing when under pressure for example) over the years and they've had no problems refunding me.

Have you talked to them at all since ? At the end of the day, they want your business again in the future....
