Second thoughts on the m3

Guys,

Il give a quick run down on the situation im in at the minute.

I originally bought the m3 evo on the condition that this was the one that wasn't going to be sold or atleast not for a long ass time anyway.

I got engaged earlier last year which wasn't an issue as we aren't getting married until nov 2016. What became an issue was the money that we were putting aside for the wedding quickly was switched to 'lets get a house before this bloody new mortgage deposit rate comes in'!!

So anyway we bought a house and moved in 1st week in Jan.

I made a decision then to downgrade in cars to try and cut expenditure etc etc

The opportunity came up to take my oul boys e38 back from my brother which I did and has been great so far but in the end it was going to have to go as it doesn't really make sense regarding cutting costs with the high tax, petrol etc.

Anyway the situation is I put them both up for sale as you may know. Took a deposit on the e38 a few days ago so that should be gone in the coming days.

The issue im having at the min is trying to find a car that id like to drive which suits all my needs.

For example
Car has to have 4 seats
4 doors is a bonus but not important really
low tax is a bonus
low running costs is also a bonus
car must be fun to drive
must have decent power
good fun factor

As you can see im not picky at all!!!

I short listed a few with the budget I think il roughly have
DC2 r with lowish miles and clean(she would go ape shit)
CL1 euro r with decent spec (iv had 2 already)
s2000( 2 seater doesn't really suit + iv already had one)
silvia s14(had one plus the way id want it wouldn't really suit as a daily) (she would also go ape shit)

Few others but they are the main.

What I need you opinion on is.....
Should I just cop the hell on and get the m3 back on the road?
Am I just being stupid here and will go buy one of the above and totally regret it?

I love the m3, honestly the only reason its for sale is the idea of 'cutting costs'

Its a great example with nearly all the spec you'd want on an m3 evo

Insurance wise it aint to bad considering my age. Tax is a pain but sure it is what it is.

Regarding running costs and saving...Im sure I wouldn't go starving take it that way!!

If I was to put it back on the road and spend a few quid from the original 'new car budget' what should I do?
Also is anybody has an idea of costs etc that would help.

Sorry for the lost winded essay but my head is wrecked with deciding what to do.

If you advertise this car on Pistonheads it will sell in no time.

Good saloons will sell easily.

You're wasting your time trying to sell the car on donedeal etc.

Those dam houses and wedding always ruin the fun :p

Selling it or how quickly isn't the issue. As the money I get for it wont be spent just put into savings etc.

Deciding what to buy with a separate budget is the problem....or to buy anything at all and get back into great m powered motoring?

"Do I sell and buy something else, or keep the car and drive it"???

Need more info to answer that,

Is it financially affordable to tax it for a year at €1.5K and drive it at maybe 20MPG covering the mileage you do and covering maintenance?? insurance shouldn't be an issue as they can qualify for a classic policy now, well my own did last year and its 1999, so €350 with limited mileage.

If you do sell it whats your budget to get in another car??

Yes I can afford to run the car on a daily/yearly basis etc.

I did enquire about the classic car policy, rang about 5-6 different insurance companies and all said that this car (98) doesn't qualify.

Budget would be roughly 5-6k euro.

The potential sale of this car would be totally separate. Wouldn't be putting the money towards the new purchase

I think it will be hard to get the practicality and performance from that budget, 300bhp M power with four doors is a nice place to be.

Especially if your car is in good condition which it appears to be.

Try first Ireland for your classical policy, I got my own there two years ago, I do have limited mileage on my policy though.

Honestly iv never paid much attention. Would 100% not be more then 10k miles. Doubt id even be close to be honest.

What sort of mileage qualifies for 'limited mileage' these days?

I now live only 10min drive from work. Only other places id normally go would be gym(2mins) or either of our parents which is no more then 5 miles to both. The odd few other country weekend trips etc but that's it.

It's hardly worth changing, anything else you buy may have lower running costs but will probably be depreciating where the M3 is not.

You have no idea!! This is rediculous.

Stick with the M3 insure it as a classic. I'd push first Ireland on this if they refuse you. They've covered me on any Bmw once it's 15 years old.

My policy is up in oct. No point in loosing the last 4 months ncb to try get a classic policy. It would be something for next renewal. They may be wary of my age iswell. Think their excuse last time was that the car age stipulations habe changed. That the car needs to be older or something. I habe a thread about what was said to me on here somewhere

I feel your pain lad!! But I'll through my 10 cents in. 19 years ago I sold my E36 328i sport to build my first house and like yourself I could have done it without selling but my gut told me sell to keep costs down,my girlfriend (now my wife) and I ran around in her 93 clio for a couple of years and when the ducks lined up I bought some nice cars again.

If you are gonna reduce costs cut them to the bone the tighter you cut the quicker you will get back into a M

from my experience i wouldn't sell it. the m3 is only going one way in value. you could sell now for whatever it will make and the money will be gone in a matter of months. then think about trying to find a spare 5k in the future to buy one, if you can even find one for that price. it's very difficult. i'd definitely say scrimp and save and store the car and buy a run about. you'd get a lovely 318is for peanuts. you're not losing money by keeping it because you've already had the outlay when you bought it. I sold my ae86 a few years ago for similar reasons and i've regretted it ever since and now they're rocketing in price again. DON'T DO IT!

Car is now back on the road, insured and taxed for another 3 months

So for the time being this is no longer for sale.....

Good move for now Kris, see how it all pans out for 3 months and then relook at it if needed. If you do decide to sell it then I would be going with what Gavin46 said and cut it all to bone with something very bland and basic to get you buy for the time being. I doubt though you'll sell after driving it around for the next 3 months :D.

Good choice but if going down the selling route, look an s3, bit of fun, nippy and only a 1.8.
