crazy thing is any M3 that's imported now will end up costing 30-40k by the time import fees and VRT is taken care of :eek:
Surely we're not anywhere near those prices for an imported one, it should only cost an extra 5k onto the price of one last year from the uk and no extra to bring one down from the North. I still think you could have a decent one in for mid 20's.
There was a fella in Galway who imported 3 very clean smg ones from Japan last summer. He sold two of them and kept one. The two he put up for sale were both silver grey, one with 78k miles for 19500 and the other with 65k miles for 22000 cleared. UK prices should be on par with Japanese stuff now so maybe going to Japan would be a better option at least you wouldn't have to worry about rust.

How much roughly would a VRT be for e46 m3 today? 20k+ sounds like an awful lot of money for an old bimmer there is not even that rare.
Edit: just had a look on DD for e46 m3 and there is sweet f all!

Age and mileage seems to have a big influence on the vrt cost. Just speaking from experience I know a fella who brought a 03 one in last March with 121k miles and paid 3200. The fella who brought in the Japanese ones said the vrt quote on the 03 one with 78k miles was 4500 and the 05 one with 68km was 5500. These were all SMG's so probably a lower OMSP than a manual.
I think a member on here brought a manual one in late last year and VRT'd it for 5k.
The days of getting one for 10k are definitely gone but I think the market is silly at the moment and people are trying to capitalise on brexit. I think once the dust settles prices will start to come back down. Either way I'm just happy I bought my one before it went mad.

In that case I d just buy high mileage that been kept up with all the jobs, then it should work out cheaper and best case.
Surprised there is not much for sale at the moment.
Maybe due to time we are living in now. Everything in pause state, as you said waiting for stuff to settle. I assume that would be the case for all performance cars.
I doubt e46s will come back down in price tbh, they’re only going one way in the uk

Given CSLs even with high mileage are making 50k+ again now after they had a brief drop in prices maybe 2 years ago where you could pick up a nice one "one to use" for around 30-40k sterling like Phil Morrison did.
A CSL interior alone now are making the price of a good normal M3!!!

Covid has had a funny effect on car prices recently due people having abit more cash to spend so sellers are either trying their luck or just locking things away. Brexit then worrying people too.
All the scrap yokes making silly money at the moment will go back down (is200s and the like making upto 10 grand :rolleyes:) but I'd imagine decent cars won't drop much and just maybe level off in prices at best due to any good ones that have sold probably won't be on the market again for a long time
A gent I know paid €5550 vrt on his M3 late last year. I know another guy who just added a CSL to his collection. No VRT worries for him though.

Maybe to add to my point. Now I understand due to age number of cars will be going down and prices for existing going up. My gripe is with people salivating over some old car with very low mileage that never leaves the garage, and now its worth mad money. It becomes monetary admiration. Posses zero character in return. I tend to want to have cars that I can use, but to be fair to the collectors that wrap their cars in cotton wool, etc they are the exact reason why there ARE some very nice older cars for us to see at shows, etc. Who hasn’t drooled over a lovely original e9 CSL at some show, or an e30 M3 Evo? They ONLY get to be original and old by not being used a lot. The ones that continue to be used as daily drivers, etc are the donor cars of some time in the future because they get worn out eventually.
I know people will probably mention restorations but they are a totally different thing. You can physically restore a car, but you can’t restore originality.
There is nothing cooler than a daily driven desireable car, like an m3 or 911. I admire someone that puts 200k miles on a 996 gt3 more than someone that puts a 5k mile one in storage to look at once a year til they sell it.
As the owner of a "garage queen" I like the idea of doing 2 or 3k per year, going to shows and enjoying the summer holidays. If I daily drove it, I'd hate it I reckon. Striking a balance is key.
You will all be delighted to hear the Alpine White car has 2k miles on it.

I'm using mine as a daily since I bought it back in June and will be doing so until I can put it on a classic policy next year. I do very small mileage as my commute to work is under 10km, so not to worried about clocking up big miles in it. While I do still love driving it, I find for the last few months when I'm working nights I take the wife's car just to enjoy the comfort and the not having to come to a complete stop at every speed bump. Definitely agree with trying to strike a balance as driving one all the time probably takes some of the specialness away.

I would agree it's nice for crazy low mileage stuff to be locked away though alright like 2K mile E46 M3s, the pair of E30 M3 Sport Evos a few years ago with 9 and 20 miles on them and other stuff that's sub 10 or 20k miles in flawless condition.
However... I think lads locking away stuff that has anything more than 30k miles is abit sad. Even a 10 year old car with that mileage is going to have bits of wear and tear on it and even bits of surface rust and paint imperfections or little bits of stone chips here and there so might as well just drive the bloody things and spend the time and effort to restore them to as good as original or better when needed.
