BBS Rc 090 Rebuild

so did a a deal on these style 5 wheels, I will run these on the e36 for the summer, i know they are a popular wheel but i always had a thing for them and they really look good on e36's plus you can customise them so much, they are fantastic condition already but i hate black rims, but the lips don't have one single mark on them, after getting a few quotes to strip them and powder coat the centres i decided i will do mist of the work myself

so i got a my hands on a 10m 12 point socket and began to loosen the bolts, it was not difficult to be honest

after i had them all loose i used the ratchet and one nut and slightly screwed the nut back on and tapped each one of them out, a bit time consuming but to minimise any damage it was the best way

then i got a piece of wood and lay it across the face and after a few tries the face just popped out, i was worried this would take ages but luckily nothing seized up over time so happy days

so after getting the lips free from the bolts it was a good opportunity to give the lips another polish, i had a toll called the "ball buster that i had gotten from clean car before to do exhaust tips etc, it was perfect size for the lips,

also used a great metal polish called britemax which is top quality, i just the lip a few passes and it it really came up like a mirror

the plan with these is to rebuild using gold bolts ( the proper m7x30 splined ones) silver faces and the genuine red and gold 3d centre badges but they will be inserted into a BBS ~RS polished metal hex cap so should look good on the e36

M7 could be difficult to get unless youre using your old bolts. I have a thing for these wheels to, they are class.

small update on this

I managed to undo ll the nuts and seperate the faces from the rim, It was not too difficult as i had expected.

Once the faces were off i gave the lips a really good polish wit the metal polish and drill , really happy with them as they are like a mirror now !

the faces are ready to go for powder-coating now but the only issue i have if someone can help is how do i describe that i want a hyper silver finish n them, ? is there a code on these colours or what way does it work?

also i spent a good hour washing the inside of the rim removing any dirt and tar and removing wheel weight s but i cannot remove the wheel weight residue, i have tried AG tar remover and sticky residue remover but it aint working, anyone any tips?

some of the hardware for the rebuild is on its way already minus the bolts as im still pricing them


im using a modified hex cap which is polished metal and not plastic and it sits over the plastic hex cover on the main cap, i think it s looks a lot better and the polished metals should look well together.

Very nice, very retro F1 looking. What polish have you used on the lip?

they were in very good condition already but i used a product called britemax metal polish, its great stuff and also there another polsih that goes with it to final polish and seal any metal hou use it on.

Use a heat gun on the glue residue to get it soft and make it easier to remove, the AG tar and glue remover isn't the strongest but will be ok to remove the small bits that are left.

need some advice
i got the centres powder coated and im very pissed off because its not the shade of colour im looking for, its mainly my fault because i chose the colour and on the samples it looked OK but on the wheel its too white looking, basically im looking for a nice shade of silver metallic that contrasts well with a polished lip

i have been googling for hours to try and get a "RAL" number of specific colour name for the silver i want so i can re do them an be happy with them

are you spraying yourself or getting someone to do it? where did you buy titan silver ? maybe that colour would work for me

im using gold bolts and red centre cap so the it has to be right

I was seriously thinking about trying this wurth stuff , its very good and OEM match for BMW wheels

I'm off to get a torque wrench that goes up to 25 so I assemble these today !


Also I re sprayed the centers in oem BMW silver so they look much better
Also ordered replica red and gold badges just for test purposes to make sure I like them and then get the original ones [WEARY FACE]

You don't need a torque wrench, just use thread lock and tighten them as normal. I did mine with a buzz gun and their fine!

Yes aivis ! Gave 4 coats of lacquer for protection . Hope it hold a out well

Ur right that's the bad thing about powder cost is you have to paint plastic cap and it never same colour . I'm really happy with this colour . Wurth silver is very good stuff and oem match for BMW rims


Btw does anyone have a spare plastic cap remover for these center caps?

They are not style 5s but I think I will be giving my RC040s the same treatment once they are off the estate as the dish are pretty dirty and the bolts are rusting again :( I gave the dishes a go with some Metal Polish today and could see some results but to do a proper job I should have taken wheels and bolts off.
I think I will redo the center's colour as I went for the Powder Coat and the plastic centers are a different colour... :@

Its time consuming but worth it, I think you should split them down and it will make it a lot easier aright. The rc41s look great with fresh centres and polished bolts. powder coat is great on normal alloy that is all metal but for example these wheels have plastic centre caps and i was given a RAL colour matched aerosol for the cap it was never the exact same shade as the metal plus the colour i was suggested turned out to be horrible. The the RC 041 has wider spokes and should be easier to do so i would suggest getting a product called dupli-color if you can source i or get "Wurth lacquer special" which is a alloy wheel specific paint which is what i used
I got a teng tools torque wrench from a mate of mine just for this job, i presume halfords or a good motor shop would sell them!
they are pricey enough for any decent one.

Will give them a good wash and final polish and apply wheel armor by G techiq. Best wheel sealant on the market , should make life easier to maintain them

Looking good there Claudio ! Next you will have to put up a picture of the wheels with the cap and Red BBS emblem on it and I am sure it will be legendary :wink:
I would suggest you put the BBS valve caps only once you get to the shows as if you leave them on they might scratch the dish due to the centrifugal force…
It happened to my Calibre Vintage alloys on the E46…

All 4 wheels balanced ,sealed and Mounted .really happy with the results

I decided not to fit the polished HEx caps i got from the states so they will be up for sale
Also gave the car a good clay and seal with cg glossworkz and AG HD wax and came up pretty well

look nice were did you get the gold bolts from ? I stripped down a set of 5 of these years ago to put on the e30m3 but then got my hands on a set of 16" rs 3 piece so the rc90's remain in pieces ready to paint may do them this summer

Nice one Claudio, they are just deadly gorgeous and they are just spot on with the car ! Love the red BBS center which recalls the red of the car. It's "little" things which make all the difference :wink: Well done, love it !

No wheels came like that I think they came off a 7 series
