There was a BBC newswatch on that last year wasnt there? I think BMW have released a software update to stop this happening. Its free of charge for UK customers but we have to pay in Ireland as they didn't reckon there was a threat.

RE: This Worries Me Alot!!
There's a software update from BMW that fixes this issue, although it only affects certain cars so I was told by Bolands.
You could have the OBD port moved somewhere else (locked glovebox) if you're concerned about it. I have my own solution in place - which I'm not going to detail on a public forum - which allows me to sleep soundly at night. In saying that, if someone really wants to take your car, they will. It's not worth being stabbed, shot or maimed for something that is ultimately replaceable.

Yea i can see why you would not want to go into detail, locked in a glovebox maybe not but moved somewhere could be a good idea and get a lock for it..
My car is parked on the street, it may be under a camera and outside a gunshop but i have already taken more security measures..

If they want your car they'll take it my dads friend had two dogs in the house and they still managed to steal it with a fishing rod through the letterbox and then picked them up as they were on the side table . And tbh I wouldn't like the idea of them in my house

RE: This Worries Me Alot!!
A real pain the butt
I actually worked on the 330i about 2-3 weeks ago. It is a nice car indeed. Hope it turns up in one piece

RE: This Worries Me Alot!!
heres an idea....why dont we all start a thread to tell each other what security measures we have in place in our cars and secret buttons and switches / flame throwers / 19 rottweillers in the boot etc etc
THAT WAS A JOKE BTW ....
As someone who has sufferd badly at M cars in particular being targeted by these people ive learned several harsh lessons....
1. NEVER discuss security arrangements online where your car is concerned
2. Use common sense with taking measures ... all you can do is take reasonable steps to make things more difficult / slow them down - without having an effect on your day to day life
3 . i cant believe iam saying this but anyone who has keys visible / hanging within sight of a front door letterbox is just asking for trouble! its the oldest trick in the book and yet here we are still hearing about it regular as clock work
4 . dont fool yourselves into thinking " oh if they come into the house ill go all karate kid on their ass " - no you wont - your fooling yourself .. you will hand them anything they want in order to get them out of your house and away from you / your family / loved ones
tom sent me a few links to this OBD stuff yesterday and its an interesting read.. but nothing really new ...high end stuff has been the target of higher end scum since man made cars.. its just this technology is filtering down to more regular machines now which is bringing it to our attention
Feel gutted for anyone who has lost their cars through this or any other theft from outside their house ....

RE: This Worries Me Alot!!
Its like this, no one is setting out to kill you, faced with a choice 99% of people will use that as a last ditch attempt so if you defend yourself without putting the other person in a position where their only way to escape is to do harm.
I had a crew try and break into my garage, lots and lots of tools, expensive and sought after parts. Now I live in the country but im well known in csr circles so most people know what I have.
so 2 guys dropped off and 2 at the crossroads 200 yards down the road. My dog sounded off (fantastic alarm and deterrent) and alerted me to what was going on. I headed out side and straight away spotted the tits carrying wheels, I picked up a rock, threw it as hard as I could, shouted something life threatening and made a charge for them. They fled through a field away from the cross roads and as this happened I heard the car lighting up towards the house. At this stage I thought its them or me and I wasnt going down easy. I grabbed a half shaft and ran for the main road to see the car, a black passat pass like a flash but I still managed to get the half shaft through their side window.
I never had anyone back unannounced since that.
The moral of the story is, defend yourself, this stuff if yours and you earned it for yourself, not for someone else. Get mad but know your limits and be brave.

In this case just remember these lads are not from just up the street from you trying to nick your car, i myself would not put these in the same bracket as the common criminal.. These are highly organised gangs taking these cars with this technology and more than likely not from this country...
I can see your point with the common thug but i would prefer not to meet one of these lads in my hallway anyway...

Is there proof of this assertion though? Rather than what was previously reported as a gang of roaming thugs taking these cars whom originating from North Dublin.
Less highly organised more willing to travel further.
From your description you are making these lads out to be crazed version of the italian job.

Im just saying there not the common thug from down the street as they would not have the technology and i think this is quiet obvious.. There obviously a well organised unit if they can get into these cars and drive away with with no keys and breaking no glass...
Well maybe its just obvious to an idiot like me..:huh:

RE: This Worries Me Alot!!
But where do you draw the line? Is it acceptable that if you have a nice BMW and live in the city that it can be stolen by well computerised criminals? No.
can the cops catch them, no.
Something needs to be done, communally. I dont know what that is but no one else is doing anything to help.

I agree with you but a car is not worth risking anyones life for... Get better security and slow em down hopefully stop em is the best you can do..
Like dont get me wrong i own a gun shop, if they come into my house i will protect myself and my girlfriend given the chance but im not going to start a vigilante group to get these lads...
To me is about protecting yourself and making everyone in your house safe as possible..

RE: This Worries Me Alot!!
There is one low tech measure that would costs less than €10 to implement & can be implemented differently from car to car. It would render this theft by OBD useless.
It is nearly just as easy for a theif to just break in to the house & take the keys. That's what they have been doing since systems like EWS (chip in key) type systems have been implemented.

Common thugs can by these yolks off the internet just like any Joe soap. There was a gang caught and charged last year for multiple offences. This singular isolated incident is worth getting worried a lot about,
Just because someone can take your car using bog standard equipment doensnt make them a criminal mastermind or highly organized. Im sure these tips come out in st pats.

Common thugs cant "by these yolks" off the internet to start a car through the OBD Port to start.. This is not "Bog Standard Equipment" these lads are using and if it is send me on a link to buy one...
"This singular isolated incident is worth getting worried a lot about" Is there a NOT missing from that sentence??
Im not sure what your trying to say?? There are 2 incidents on the 1 forum in 2 days and both OBD Port related which has not been happening in this country yet only in the uk so i think it is something to worry about for people with this flawed security in their car..

About a minute of searching:
http://www.vag-info.com/category/preview/BMW
http://www.autodiagnostictools.co.uk/auto-key-programmers/
http://www.car-key-immo.com/bmw/
They're not cheap but they are readily available.

They were originally 12k euro the cheaper they get the worse its going to get one car and they have made the cost back

Yes but with these you need the key to copy it right?? If that was the case they would have to rob the key anyway which they are not doing???
So how exactly are they gettin into and starting the car??

There are videos linked from at least 2 of those sites demonstrating the programming of a blank key using only the OBD port. Since you can access the OBD without putting a key in (as it's on all the time) you just need to gain physical access to the car, which means breaking a window or bypassing the lock with a frequency generator.

electronic stuff does all work !! even if U open car with key ,with copy one ,without alarm system in it and mobilizer ,car alarm will be activated straight away ,so to get just copy is useless .

RE: This Worries Me Alot!!
One way they get in to your car is by you unknowingly leave it unlocked.
I have read that one way they prevent you from locking your car is by using a signal jammer. You park up on your driveway for the night, hop out of the car & click your remote button on your key fob & head in to the house. You assume that the car is locked but in reality the remote never makes contact with your car due to interference from the signal jammer planted near where you park.
You can pick up a simple signal jammer for about €50. I have one for mobile phone frequencies, for test purposes. My one isn't even the right band for the remote key fobs yet it will still prevent the remote from locking the car when it is within a few feet of the car!
This is how they get in to your car without breaking anything. This is also why I recommend that people get the audible chirp on locking enabled so you know your car is locked.
-
RE: This Worries Me Alot!!
Apologies for reviving the thread folks, just asking on behalf of some colleagues:
So basically other than the signal jammer and forgetting the car unlocked, they would need to have your key (or break the glass) to get into the car and access the OBD port?

No you can drop the window without they key
Then they slide their arm along the door card to reach the obd port, connect up their key programmer then make a key from scratch.
All that without the alarm going off. Thanks to the motion sensor weakness

Urban legend, never was a fixed released I have learned from all my flashes.
The only thing they do is to disable opening/closing the windows from the key fob.

That will oblige them to break the window. Makes noise eventually.
This combined to an OBD port relocation and they can't make the key no more.
