This car has been for sale for at least 7 years, and has been the subject of many different forum threads.
It's back up for sale again, but I notice that the asking price has gone from £65,000 to £75,000.
I'm not sure that the strategy of increasing the price when the car hasn't found a buyer in 7 years is going to work.
I can't help thinking that if he cleaned it up, recommisioned it, and marketed it properly, that it would be gone quickly.

Out of curiosity if you were to buy it and register it for the first time in Ireland would it be on a 161 plate ?
For God sake, wouldn't you think they would give it a splash of water.

So you'd be looking at VRT based on the rolled up cost, VAT (because its new) and the initial purchase price bringing the total to approx. €200k. It would also be subject to CO2 based road tax, €2400 per year, thank you. But you would have a 161 plate!
I remember doing sums on a micro mileage e39 540i Sport manual a few years ago that was about 7 years old at the time. Because of the mileage it would have been treated as a new car, for both VRT and VAT. Rather than bringing it straight home, if you drove it to the southern wine regions of France, filled the boot with decent wine and drove it home the VRT alone would have dropped by about €16.5k (probably €15.5 after paying for the wine :))
There was a collector a few years ago who was buying a Merc CLK DTM cabrio with very low miles. He got a guy to drive on up and down and Autobahn to put miles on it before be brought it in here to avoid the vat.
You wouldn't have to pay the VAT, just the difference in VAT, the VAT would have been paid when the car was originally bought.
Not sure of the finer points of VAT rules but I'd guess that would depend on the VAT status of the initial buyer (may or may not be the seller in this case), whether there have been intervening owners and whether the seller is in a position to issue a VAT invoice now for the car.
