Lacquer pealed during car wash.....

Usually I would wash my e60 myself but my back has been acting up this week so decided to tip down to the local maned car wash. I noticed that the pressure on the lance was pretty strong and the guy using it was holding it a bit too close to my car than I liked. So I had a look when he finished and noticed a patch of lacquer had lifted from the top of the bootlid. Needless to say I did go off on one a bit he agreed to repair it after about 20 mins of arguing. I'd rather have my own paint guy do the job as he has done work for me in the past but he wants a friend of his to repair it. Any advice on what to do here would be great guys as he is really pushing for his friend to do the work but I'm afraid it will be done cheep and wont look 100% when finished.

Me hat, he damaged your car he's professionally liable. You'd be well within your rights to tell him Bmw are doing it

Its very much a grey area.
There would have had to have been some sort of defect in the paintwork, prior to him power washing it, to lift the lacquer. And it is not impossible to get a stone chip on the boot lid.

Is he insured? If so, you should stand your ground and get the job you want.
If he's not, perhaps get him to agree to give you the cash, and put a bit extra towards the job you want done.

As I said already guys I have washed this car myself every weekend since May and never had an issue. I just found it strange that the first time I let someone else wash it this happens. Maybe your right it could have got paint on the bootlid before but at the end of the day his strong lance did the damage. Thanks for your replies but I was asking for advice on where I stood on getting my guy to repair it, not if my car ever got paint before.

Where you stand with the car wash is tantamount to whether or not the car got paint.

Holding the guy who washed it responsible for sub standard paint work isn't fair or right. The lacquer peel was inevitable, he just happened to be the poor sod who unearthed the problem.

The fact that he's prepared to do anything is a credit to him.

But the finish on the boot lid is factory. He said he has a guy who did work for him in the past. Or am I missing, that the boot lI'd has had paint?

I dont think the boot got paint before to be honest about it. I'm pretty sure if it was your car that this happened to your opinion might be a little different. Yes he did agree to repair it to be fair to him but I want my guy to do the work and he wants his guy.

If the lacquer peeled, the boot got paint, there's no way a factory finish peels from a power washer.

The M5 is going to be painted in the new year, this wouldn't happen as I always wash my own car but hypothetically speaking, if I took my freshly painted car to a car wash and my lacquer peeled, I would be straight on the phone to the painter as the work clearly wouldn't be fit for purpose.

In my opinion, the compromise is to take the monetary equivalent of what his friend would charge him and you pay the difference to get it done to your standard.

Even if the freshly painted work was top notch, unless it peeled in multiple places, it's impossible to pin the blame on the painter. Unless you inspect 100% of the surface prior to every time its power washed, how is anyone to know what exactly caused the peel. If it peels in several places then yes, you'd be right to question the job by the painter.

It would really depend, I know we're going way off topic but in factory paint, the base coat adheres to the lacquer, so if the lacquer peeled off the base coat, the car has been painted, poorly.

I don't think you would have a hard job holding a painter responsible for lacquer peeling following a windows out paint job. No power washer should be able lift lacquer from paint that isn't already defective.

Unless you inspect every square inch of the car, how are you to know prior to power washing.

You could get a stone chip 500 yards up the road after collecting a freshly painted top notch job.

If a stone chip caused lacquer peel I would make the argument that the lacquer wasn't applied correctly, it shouldn't lift without taking the base coat with it.

Bonnet on my Golf lost the laquer, Small little chip and I was able to pressure wash the rest of it off going very close. Looked completely original paint to me!

Lucked out and bought a bonnet same colour for €40. :)

After good paint work ,no chance to get lacquer peel ! Even after stone chip ! It's just not good job done . What ever cash he would offer U ,it's his choice .no chance for BMW estimate to be paid off

If the guy has insurance, you can try and go through it - you will have your choice of company IF they approve the claim. I'd be willing to bet they'll argue the damage was pre-existing, and if he is actually legit enough to be insured, then he's likely to have some sort of disclaimer relating to your cars paint being in good condition.

If he's not insured then you're dependent on good will unless you want to get a solicitor involved.

FWIW - I dropped my old E30 off for a detail a few years back - got a call pretty soon afterwards to say a chunk of paint had lifted off the bumper while they were washing it. I knew it was down to a crap paint-job, so left it at that.
