I have a 2007 E61 LCI 523i.
VIN decoder tells me that I have option S694A on my car [Provisions for BMW 6 CD changer].
realOEM.com tells me that the CD changer unit I need is 65129131850 (plus the cartridge)

Question: If I buy one of these used, do I need to code it to my car, or is it plug and play?
Also - I see some of the units on ebay include a clamp. Do I need this?

$694 is the spec sheet's way of saying that the power cable & fibre optic cable to connect in the CD Changer is physically in place.
$672 says on the spec sheet that the CD Changer is present, however when it is in the VO it tells the relevant modules in the car (in this case CAPPL/MASK) that it needs to adjust the config to talk to the CD Changer.
You could just go in to CAPPL/MASK and set CD Changer to "aktiv" but that might get undone if the module ever got reset, which can happen. Alos while you're at it you might as well enable MP3 capability, this means you can put MP3s on a CD too and play them as opposed to just relying on regular CDs.
Both jobs only take a minute to do.

I picked up a CD changer unit yesterday. Removed the blank plate in the glovebox last night.
What is the the correct order? Fit the unit, then code the car, OR code the car first, then fit the changer?
I'd be interested in being able to play MP3 CDs also - it never occurred to me that the in-dash CD player would have this capability.
How do you explicitly switch this feature on?

Physical install first, then code. It actually doesn’t matter for this particular job! ;)
