Supercharging an M52B25
Hi folks,
Just out of curiosity and interest really, what would be involved, what superchargers are available, what power gains could one expect, and what costs would you be looking at?
I know it would probably be cheaper to drop an S50B30/32 lump in but how much cheaper? Would be more interesting to supercharge imo :)

RE: Supercharging an M52B25
get cab on the case..did you ever see the kits on ebay, would be afraid they would blow up but haven't seen evidence on any car site they have failed either.would be some project..go for it

RE: Supercharging an M52B25
Yea would be great if supercharging is an option somewhere down the line, as a lot of work has gone/will go into the car and engine is nice and healthy so would like to stick with it :)

RE: Supercharging an M52B25
You'd have your Dakar M3 for the money though...just saying :tounge:

It almost sounds too easy....???
If it's plug and play as described it'd be pretty amazing! .....Hmmm maybe it's not too late to cancel holidays :p

RE: Supercharging an M52B25
i pricing putting a turbo in mine your thinking of supercharging yours, these are going to be two very interesting 323's
-
RE: Supercharging an M52B25
This would not be any time soon Shaun... :p but good to know what can be done further down the road. Would be very interesting to see the results! :D

RE: Supercharging an M52B25
same myself sure ive it pencilled in for next summer. Be getting all the kit in bits and pieces so to spread financial burden and fit what can go on as i go ie evo back end, exhaust upgrade big brake kit etc

RE: Supercharging an M52B25
YOU HAVE A SUPERCHARGER AND YOU HAVEN'T TOLD US?? :D
Is it the same as the one on e36coupe? can room be made for it or is it just a no go?

Supercharging an M52B25
That's a turbo!!! Off something else I presume!!!
-
RE: Supercharging an M52B25
I'd imagine turning a rhd would be very difficult with the steering column in the way. All the turbo stuff u see in dinternetz is left hand drive. Why not supercharge an m3 engine?
-
RE: Supercharging an M52B25
Whoops my bad :D
I think ADAMOD on here is turbocharging a 328 and iirc he had to cut a part of something and then reinforce it, not sure I remember what it was.
I thought supercharging the M52 vs an S50 as that's what I have and I know it's a good healthy engine rather than getting something else.
Can somebody confirm whether or not supercharging the M52 is as simple as it's made out to be in that ad? Is it just a matter of paying for the kit/labour or is there other complications? Feels like an x-ray goggles ad in the back of a comic book :p
Why aren't more people doing it?
-
RE: Supercharging an M52B25
If you stick with 8psi boost-it is that simple. But i tell you from my SC experience, after a while 8psi is boring you will want more. But it is a good thing that this kit in the add could be upgraded further, from the box it has a very good base.So if after few years you decide to strengthen the engine, you can up the boost a bit more to.

RE: Supercharging an M52B25
Thanks Narusa, that's great :) could be a real option in the future so.
I wonder why more people don't do it? One spends thousands on maintenance and mods, why not on a supercharger? Maybe it feels like too much of a commitment? :p

RE: Supercharging an M52B25
possibly because its sacrilage to the purists :-P
-
RE: Supercharging an M52B25
I'd imagine it's the cost and also the e36 is 20 years old. Be fun though :smiling:

I was chatting to Cab about it a while ago, I think my car would be a prime example to do it on to be honest. Very low mileage and I would be completely nuts doing an S50 conversion on it. At 8psi I would be expecting to achieve at least around 300bhp, but the low down torque is where I think I'd get the most use out of it. The AA kit seems the best, the main problem is getting hit with customs importing it from the states as far as I can see, I pay enough in tax, really would prefer not to give them a bundle more. I think it could be done for well under 5k including install and a live map with 95RON fuel, I wonder how it would affect my premium and who would insure it? I presume I'd have to get an engineers report as well for insurance reasons?

Well... To be honest it's almost impossible to know where to draw the line... it really does get blurred over time! Important thing is to be happy with the car :)

Well when you think getting a new set of wheels, (or a decent old set and refurbing it) + decent tyres is 1200 - 1500 or so...

Prime candidate indeed, I'd say with an M50 manifold and remap you could probably adjust the power band to your liking (within reason). Yea screw paying extortionate amounts to customs. That kit on e36coupe seems absolutely ideal, if I wasn't going on a 3 week holiday tomorrow I would genuinely snap it up!

Ask Cab afaik he has coils and charger down.

RE: Supercharging an M52B25
It would indeed be ideal, the only problem with it is thats its an awful lot a cash to fork out not to have a warranty with it.

AFAIK its because he is with FBD and the were more or less forced to quote due to him being a long time customer. If I remember correctly though it wasnt a massive difference. I know a lot of insurance companies get bees in their bonnets once you go over 300bhp.

Not to drag the thread down another avenue but I though insurance companies were obliged to give you a quote especially if you already have the car?

RE: Supercharging an M52B25
@ Dave: Yes, I took it for a spin to Glengarrif over the weekend, and on the twisty mountain roads I very quickly forgot about parking dings, lacquer peel, and nosecone... I'll get to them when I get to them.... But for now the car is a real pleasure to drive, just going to enjoy that for a while :)
Just re: insuring the a car with something like a supercharger, I've always wondered - when you call them to get a quote, would they flag the car on their system in some way or would the next company you call be none the wiser?
-
RE: Supercharging an M52B25
Have the same idea , and was just messing in the photo seeing where it could possibly be mounted .
There is room at the front of the engine down low but its nearly level with the sump meaning it needs a scavenger pump on the oil return line, also would need a splash guard in sump to stop oil pushing back up the line. All a major ball ache.

Hey Peter asked the father there (insurance broker) he said even if u insured your car with a supercharger named etc and sold it its up to the new owner to declare all modifications as it won't be flagged .
