Hot Hatch recommendations.

So doing a bit of man maths at the moment, I am considering moving on the Range Rover.

Currently have the hyundai i40 estate which fulfills the family duties perfectly.

The Rangerover is fine, but I do a lot of urban driving for work, lots of starting and stopping.

The Range Rover is extremely comfortable for trips to Cork to visit inlaws etc which I may miss

At the moment the wife is using it for the school commute I then use the i40.

My plan is to give the wife the i40 and sell the RR, with the intention of picking up a hot hatch for popping about town in for work. The i40 will be grand for the kids dog and buggies etc.

Budget between 5 and 9 K.

Considering mini Cooper S
Opel corsa opc
Renault clio RS sport.

I'm open to suggestions, it may not happen at all, I'm just kicking about alternatives in my head.

would you not step up a size and go for a megane 225? thats what id love anyway, corsa opc are not fast enough and even of you do need to the back seats there a joke because of the big recaros!

I'd say sell the Range Rover, sell the i40, sell the wife and the kids and buy a race car :D

Joking aside, a GTI is probably too obvious but it's the nicest as far as these front wheel drive hatch back things go, no? Practicality with a dash of German quality and a sprinkle of fun on top :)

I'd steer clear of an opel. very unreliable.

I've got a 2005 type r civic. Although it's not everyone's cup of tea, It is great fun. I was able to drive to mondello, do a full day out including giving a few of the lads a go, and drive home with no issues apart from a set of warped brake discs.

Golf gti would be a more practical daily to be fair.

Seeing as you feel you might miss the comfort, would something like an E82 1 Series fit the bill?

That generation one series (the only 1 series I drove) is seriously fun, even the 116i.

But I'm guessing you want one with some habanero sauce on it :) so here's a nice 123d (coupe though) in budget with some contingency cash for chains/turbos.

I had seen that one too Peter but was thinking if hes wanting a hot hatch it would be a petrol he'd want. Was thinking more along the lines of a 135i :p

Really enjoying my M135i but way over budget, although it's a fairly hot, hot hatch! :)

Yea the 135is of that generation are non-existent (there isn't even a 130i online) and the M135i is over budget, 123d would be the next choice.

You're right though we went from hot hatch to diesel coupe in 6 posts :D

Which Mini Cooper S are you thinking about? Fuel economy on the R53 isn’t great, in fact, the M4 is more economical.

If you go the hot hatch route then "state of the art" should be where you're looking and in that price range I would guess that the place to be looking will be badged Renault Sport or Ford ST. There should be a decent few options in your price range.

You reminded me of Mr46 and myself taking her R53 Cooper s to Dublin from Letterkenny to see Guns & Roses think it was summer 05 I drove up fairly quick but had a few so she drove back and was done doing 118 kph outside Monaghan we literally made it to the 24 hour station in Lifford on fumes :-)

Thanks for the replies it's good for thought, I'm leaning towards petrol as opposed to diesel.

Had a chat with a friend re Cooper and decided to scratch that option from my potential list.

The golf GTI did come up in my searches also, the 4 door option is appealing re kids seats when required.

Did come across this on DD which I think is lovely, somewhat rare and should be a bit of fun to drive, it's beyond what I am willing to spend at the moment

R53 Cooper S JCW - best car ever for the city - comes with compromises - space in the back is tight, boot is non-existent, crappy mpg, rattles on bad roads to name a few - but it is fairly rapid, sounds glorious and seriously fun to drive at all speeds which makes up for all the negatives.

Why does it have to be a hot hatch? Would it not be better to buy something relatively normal and the savings can go towards the M in the summer :)

To be honest the M will be on the road for the summer months, the range rover while extremely comfortable is pretty mundane driving.

Was thinking a hot hatch with reasonable performance will be fun to drive. The drive home from Dublin in the M3 was a hoot, and got me thinking of something fun and totally impractical for daily duties.

I know the second owner of that car, he is from around this neck of the woods too. It's been through a few hands since but it was a great car when he had it. Quick too, i had a standard mk5 GTi at the time and I wouldn't have seen where this went on a backroad. Underrated for sure.

I would love an EP3 Type R, but decent ones seem to be very thin on the ground (the one posted above looks lovely though).

I've never driven a Mk5 GTI - on paper the EP3 definitely looks to be better in terms of performance, but I wonder is it the case that in the real world the torque of the GTI provides more usable performance?
