Mechanic with coding tool

My brother has an 08 320d e90 and recently he says the service logo comes up every now and again (and the clock settings get reset each day) which probably means battery is gone or maybe something else?
He called BMW to ask how much to replace it and they said 350-500, so after he stopped laughing he asked me if I know someone who can get it done. Replacing the battery no problem for me but I do remember these things need to be coded or error pop up etc.
Anyone here that can do it? Don't suppose it works with one of those obd bluetooth things and an app on your phone?

The Carly app has the battery registration and update functionality and a few people on here should be able to do this

Thanks, any idea where I can get a new battery also? I'm assuming the halfords one aren't good quality or maybe they don't work on BMWs?

I just bought a battery for my '06 E60 in Halfords last week - not a Halfords branded one (Yuasa). Not sure if they sell the AGM batteries for cars that have stop/start function

It's not stop/start so that's good I know those are around 250 or more.
The car went in for 2 recalls today and they charged the battery too, will see how that goes but not being driven daily doesn't help either.

My understanding is that the battery only needs to be coded on the E9x if the car is fitted with the idrive system which comes with Intelligent Battery Sensor (IBS). Idrive would have been an optional extra on the E9x.

Ah ok I was not aware, it doesn't have idrive, just pro radio I believe so maybe not needed then.

You could check the battery terminals, I think if it has IBS then it's a cable that runs off the battery's neutral terminal.

Looks like the car has an AGM battery. Factory one. Which makes no sense since the car is not start/stop. And this needs to be coded apparently. Where's a good place to buy agm battery in Dublin except dealers of course

If it’s not Stop/Start then you should just get a normal battery and code it.

Edit: apparently AGM batteries were also fitted to cars without stop/start function too.

I know that a normal non-AGM will work too but apparently the actual car software needs to be updated to accept non AGM battery since it had one from the factory (different from just resetting the error when the battery is replaced). Does that sound right?

That's correct, but it's just an additional step in the coding. Either way, the car still has to be hooked up and registered and/or coded.

The duty cycle in BMWs from the mid ‘00s are very heavy and BMW slowly made the move to AGM batteries in order to find a better way to handle that. The other problem they didn’t solve was the “unfavourable driving profile” rubbish. Irrespective of whether the car has a Lead Acid or Absorbed Glass Mat battery if the car is only driven short journeys there is not of a recovery charge to bring the battery back up to where it was. Over time the battery gets weak as a result.

If you are replacing a like for like battery, i.e. the same Ah rating and AGM for AGM then the battery only needs to be registered.

If you change the Ah rating or move from AGM to Lead Acid them you need to code the CAS (VO Code CAS/LMA first then “Default Code” the CAS). This is so the correct charging profile is applied to your new battery.

I hope you are doing well SD_Dracula, I think it was 7-8 years ago since I saw you last? I’m still thinking back to the cruise control on that 1 Series back then, I should have just VO coded in cruise control & default coded the replacement unit and it would have worked! I was too chicken back then!

I didn’t realise that Carly had the ability to update to a different type/rating of battery, just checked there and surprised to see it does now. Great!

Wow, that long? That cruise control thing never worked in the end, brought the car to Bloomfield and they hooked up one of the proper tools to it, enabled everything but just didn't take, the steering wheel unit might have been the fault.
Still got that 630i?
In the end replaced the battery with a new AGM one from Frank Keane (actually surprised that it came in cheaper than 3rd party battery) and got it coded by a garage that did an oil change also.

You’d be amazed sometimes at prices for some main dealer parts.

I still have the 630i but I’ve added a few cars since. The M6 being the most notable along with a Supercharged Cooper S.

Niiice. How are your coding skills at present? There's about 70 bhp hidden on my 330e which I know it's there since it has the same engine as the 330i ;)

How do you find the whole electric "thing"? Had a friend who had a F10 got a loaner of a 330e when he was planning a change in the near future and decided to take the 330e, had it for a few days and ended up bringing it back for a 420D, couldn't deal with the need for constant charging.

Nah I'm done with the diesels yuk. The charging never bothered me, had charger at work too, you just get used to it, don't even think about it anymore. The 530e and new G20 330e have wireless charging anyway so no need for plug (if you want to fork out 2.5k for the charger of course)
If the i4 would have been out sooner might have gone for that.

I’ve a soft spot for the 330e, there’s a few 330/530e at work now and they are owned by non-car people but they love them, nice power when you need it and a fully electric commute. 2019 is thevyer of the Hybrid, there’s a good few supercar hybrids coming out too this year.

There's a bunch of companies that do this now but will probably swap it for the G20 when it comes out later in the year so no point doing anything unless I keep the car.
