Importing a car previously registered in Ireland

As the title says, has anyone imported a car from the UK that was previously registered in Ireland? Any issues with having it reregistered here as regards VRT?

A car I've spotted was imported from the UK previously and exported back in the bad old days, before VRT refunds were introduced, so no refund was applied for. My assumption is that this could be re-imported and registered with the original reg number without having to fork out for VRT on the basis that it was paid previously for the same car.

Anyone see a flaw in my logic?

That is my understanding of the system also, although I have not personally done it.

When you furnish revenue with the previous reg number, it should just be a case of re issuing the old number provided the VIN and engine number check out and the car has not been modified.

AFAIK, Once you have the Reg and it's not been refunded, Inspection to check chassis number etc.. And €200 fee.

Yes can be done no problem e.g. 94WW2750 E34 M5 that came in went out and back again on the original reg.
