M52B25 E36 Brake Suggestions?

Will probably need to replace discs/pads in the near future so question is oem or aftermarket? Any recommendations?

Will consider anything but must be something of good quality as I don't want any aspect of this car to let it down - especially brakes!!!

I don't want something that costs an absolute fortune either though... Have to be realistic here.

I know the original brakes are very good and I've never felt like I needed bigger/better brakes. But with m50 manifold and exhaust installed and maybe a couple of more performance mods in the future, might be good to upgrade brakes now while I'm at it.

So with the above in mind, any ideas?

Don't go drilled. Can be prone to cracking issues. Grooved by itself should be good for the power you have and maybe also upgrade the fluid, pads and go for stainless lines.

Heard that about the drilled alright, would like to know if it's a myth though or has anybody first hand experience with this?

I had drilled crack on a 106gti go for dimpled they don't crack!!

Guys I'm still not sorted and still undecided so hence the thread revival. Can anybody recommend brakes? Good quality upgrade that doesn't cost a fortune? I know black diamond are good but I don't like that they're matte black. I'm childish and want the big shiny discs behind the wheels.. :D seriously though, any recommendations? What are mintex like?

Another thing, might be going down a supercharger route in the future, so would be nice if I can get the brakes sorted once and for all now. If it is gonna be a fortune though to fit brakes to stop 300bhp or so, I can fit regular brakes now (based on your suggestions) and put off the big brakes till I'm actually going ahead with the supercharger.

Will m54 330/530 brakes fit there 324mm discs or e36 m3 brakes think you might need hubs for this

e39 brakes is completely different story,so dont mix with 3 series :wink:

E46 330i brakes will bolt on on non M3 e36 . M3 brakes needs M3 hubs ,,so e46 discs with good tires are very good bolt on set up.and i can guarantee that they are definitely enough for 300hp fast road car

Would you need to change the master cylinder replaced Valdas?

Black diamond will shine up once you start to use them Peter. The matt finish on the contact surface will be worn off by the brake pad after a few miles.
I have the grooved option on the is for a year and a half now. There isn't a massive performance increase over standard but they do make a cool noise when braking

I meant more that they're black instead of silver, just out of curiosity do you have the g6s or g12s?

I'm not entirely sure Peter but they have 12 grooves so i'll say G12

if u can get it,it will not be worst ,but i would say its not necessary .better to get steel braided hoses if not fitted yet

on E36 M3 had OEM discs and yellow stuff ,never lost brakes,and was good enough for track day without mad pushing .on E39 530d ,oem discs and oem pads,had lot of hard drive ,in 10k km finished pads but again never overheat or worked bad .dont need to think that 300hp on road car is something unbelievable ,and im sure u will never push it so hard on the road to get them overheat or would be not enough ,only my 2 cents

Go for the 330 set up, supposed to be a huge step up in brake performance which I'm sure will be more than enough. If in time you still find braking a bit of an issue you can go for a front bbk like k-sport and at least you'll still have the upgraded rear brakes to compliment the entire set up

This, was looking at upgrading my brake setup recently myself. More to do with reducing braking distance than brake fade.

I've been looking at the Brembo 840 or the 996 brakes, but at the end of the day its overkill for a fast road car, a good set of tires and fresh brakes with braided lines would be enough imo.

996 brakes require carries and about 10mm taken off the caliper to fit with 17" wheels, 840 brembos are bolt on. Both require e46 M3 disks AFAIK.

I reckon the best bang for buck would be either 330ci brakes or e36 M3 brakes for a fast road car, and will be the route that I'll eventually take I think, 840 calipers are like gold dust :D

BTW, only the front 330i brakes will fit on e36 :)

Right, I will need to do a bit more homework but need to get brakes sorted soon as I pretty much have no brakes left! I like the idea of using e46 330i Brakes as they are oem. Thanks for the help folks :)

You only need bigger brakes if you overheat what you've got. Until them forget about it.

Better tyres are a much better option than bigger brakes.

A friend of mine has them on his Hyundai Coupe, drilled ones with no problems the last few years

They seem to be getting good reviews with people saying they're happy and would buy again. They're very well priced too! Hmm....

They rust like fuck and can be squeeky as hell from what iv read although that could be down to the pad they used

If you do a search you will see pictures of the drilled ones with the drill holes all rusted looks nasty maybe going for dimpled and grooved would eliminate the rusting

@ Chris/Ger: They are OEM discs indeed, and after a headwrecking day doing research I've ordered the dimpled and grooved version.

They are oem, they look good, they don't cost an arm and a leg, they have mostly good reviews online, and people on here and driver have used them and they are very happy with them so have to give them a go! :)

Have been reading round all morning and your right opinions have changed on them since I looked them up a few years ago main issues were as you siad with the drilled discs keep us updated anyway and report back on your findings cause they do look quite nice

They are actually the discs I ordered, if you read the description it says "Brand: MTEC" they just come with brembo pads, so the title/logo is a little misleading there!

As I said the other night a set of OE or OEM discs & pads will feel a million times better than something that has been in the car for 17 years.
Otto do a good price on ATE discs & pads.
A lot of those "upgraded" type kits are aimed at "fast road" or track use. Sometimes they don't work so well from cold, they need a bit of heat to be optimal. Good luck with the new brakes.
