Quick question on 30yr - classic road tax

    Folks

I'm fairly sure this question has been asked and answered previously, so apologies for being a slow learner, but one of the fleet is hitting the big 30 this year. In terms of the reduced road tax, is that available from the date at which it hits 30 years (August in the case of first UK reg, or April for first reg in Ireland) or is it available now that its in its 30th year?

    Thanks in advance.

Quick question on 30yr - classic road tax

See this. Depending on the local council, some are easier to deal with. Some have actually gotten it once it’s within the year without having to wait for the actual month.

Alternatively, the RSA website classify it as the 'date of 1st registration', so that would indicate it's first registration date in the UK for instance.....

    https://www.rsa.ie/road-safety/road-users/vintage

How difficult can it be to have some joined up thinking and be clear on the rules FFS....

Presuming the E36, that's some annual motor tax saving in fairness (appreciate it's not on the road all year round of course).

Just to add some confusion some tax offices around the country will change the tax class at the start of the year no matter when it was registered in that year

Nowhere in the statutes is ‘year of registration’ mentioned, or manufacture- it’s just says 30 years of age. However, classification for vintage reg plates specifies manufacture date - so it’s obviously the intent with the tax eligibility too.

I’ve never had hassle switching over on anniversary of manufacture date - some clarification would be handy though, at the very least to stop some of the jobs worth’s trying to apply the anniversary of reg date rule which they’ve just picked out from their hole.

    D,
Our e30 was manufactured in March 1990 and first registered in January 1991.

I got it changed to vintage in April 2020, for proof I just had a print out from BMW which showed the date of manufacture.

Thanks all for the feedback. The car was a July manufacture and an August registration, so I guess I'll just have to wait a little bit. Not the end of the world, I have one or two others that can see a bit of road time between now and then as a result!

Is this the 325? I still can’t believe that the e36 is now over 30 years old.

Yep, the 325i. Not sure where the last couple of years have gone, because the last time I gave it any thought there were still a few years to go. Now we're down to the last 6 months or so.

I chanced my arm a few days ago....May 1993 on log book. Go into the Motor Tax office instead of sending off or online.

Fill in RF111 before you go an sign it, make their life easy. Im not sure they are that fussed to be fair.

I had success and its worth the chance.
