    e39 front suspension knock

The car has developed a strange knock from the front suspension(possibly drivers side) , feels like a shock but they are damping as they should . When going over a speed bump seems to crash a bit and when on the motorway every so often makes a "small knock noise".the car is still tracking perfect and steering hasn't changed. overall it just doesn't feel as supple as it should. Before I put it up on a jack is there anything I need to pay particular attention to ,or is it a question of it could be anything or everything .mileage is 77k.thanks
