    its all depending on ecu and car. if you have e39/e46 upwards, the standart usb cable will be ok, if you have e36/e34 you will need tiny ads interface for coding
    What kind of things can you do with coding - does it extend as far as mapping?

    With coding you can do quiet a number of things like enabling video in motion, activate brake force display, comfort options from the fob etc.
    Coding is relatively easy as long as you know where to look for. Some features in order to be enabled need to be activated in 2 or more modules at the same time.

    Engine ecu mapping has nothing to do with coding. Look at things such as WinOLS etc
    Much more involved that coding
