    Dash Cams...

Can anyone tell me how exactly they work?
My Dad is looking into getting one of them fitted to a new Sprinter.

He does about 5ish hours driving per day, How exactly does the memory work in them?

Also which would be the best model (Quality+Easy to use!) to go for.

    Cheers,
    Ross.

The memory recycles itself on most of them, depending on the size of the Storage Card you use some can have hours of footage recorded. Most times they record in chunks of a few minutes at a time and then cut into the next segment (you wont generally notice the change into the next segment during playback.) Once the card is full most models start from scratch and record over whats already been recorded. So if you have some footage you want to take off take it off asap.

Micks garage has the best looking one ive seen in a long time for the money and is very discrete. i think its about 99 Euro.

    this is it - http://www.micksgarage.com/proddetails.aspx?pid=3419409

and here is a great detailed review of it from some guy in the UK who is big into these reviews.

Personally id have someone with knowledge wire it up for power behind the a frames to the fuse board or other power source as plugging in and out the 12V cigarette lighter will get very tiresome and he will end up just not bothering and never using it.

Bit of shameless plugging here as I work for GrabOne but I have these going on site on sale from Friday. Great price and have tested the quality myself . Link is only a preview until approved.

I have that fitted in my E60. Great camera and very discreet.

It's one of those things I hope to never need.

Been looking at the Mini 0801 on MicksGarage,
    http://www.micksgarage.com/proddetails.aspx?pid=3419412

In the case of an accident and I need to take footage from it, Do I stop it manually to stop it recording and overwriting... Stick the memory card into the computer and select which footage I want to keep? Is it as easy as that? Complete novice to these, So not a clue how they work!

Our Merc was written off last week, So all cars will have them from now on!

Pretty much yes. Power off remove card and plug into PC. All videos will be stored there in bitsize chunks and each file will be numbered and dated for order of sequence.

When picking up a dash cam keep an eye for ones with a parking mode feature like on the DR550GW.
These have the camera sit in a stand by mode, triggering to record when it detects motion or the accelerometer detects movement.
Handy if somebody is eyeing up something in your car...or in my case the Tesco home delivery truck taking my passenger mirror off for the second time.

Id be extremely wary about one of these unless it has its own power supply. This would murder your battery quick smart unless the car is being driven quite regularly and has a decent battery in it.
