That Radio issue could be a faulty radio unit. There is a speed sensitive feed in to the wipers on intermittent mode & on some radios in the e39.
The e39 is still a fantastic car even if the desgn is 20 years old & the freshest one available is 10 years old.
So most will need a bit of TLC at this stage no matter what the miles on the car.
