Thread: Tyre Recommendation Thread

I had Toyo T1rs and R888s on my E30 and were good. Size was 205/50r15 and 205 and 225s on the 16s

205/50s look nice an original but E30s handle much nicer on 15s with 50 prole tyres.

Have had Goodyear Eagle F1s on it too which were good once they were German made ones. Had ones from a Taiwan batch and were horrific.

For the M3 have had Michelin Pilot Sport and supersports on the CSLs and were great but not cheap.

Running semi-slicks on both road and for track now using 18s with 265/35 and currently have Zestinos which are very good for the price which was surprising as was sceptical at first due to being pretty cheap. Was able to do sub 2 minutes without too much trouble around the international layout at Mondello

Thread resurrection! These Rainsports have turned out to be a very good buy. I bought them in Sept 17 and have just hit the 30k km mark on them and there are 4mm left according to the BMW health check. The Hankook Ventus Prime 3 are also wearing very well - 10k km in and 6mm left.

I've literally just put the phone down with my tyre guy ordering a pair of Uniroyal RS5's for the back of the 530i. My only negative on the RS3's was that they traded some handling for wet weather performance and grip but I suspect the 5's might strike a better balance in that regard.

Recently put Goodyear Eagle F1 AS5 on my GTD. A big improvement over the AS3 I had on my last car. Would recommend.

    Tyre Recommendation Thread

Interesting! They are a tad on the soft side but the car is only used around town and then up and down the motorway so I never get to explore its handling abilities.

I don't drive round corners on the door handles either, but was a little bit conscious of the flexing causing some vagueness in steering. Of course, the flipside benefit is the wet performance and the pillow smooth ride.

    Since its resurrected....

About 22k Miles (35k KM) and they were down to about 3/3.5mm. Still very useable but got a free set of Cooper CS8 so have those on now to see what they're like.... So far no complaints.

I have noticed the DSC flashing a bit more these days, especially in the wet, so I took a closer look at the tyres. Sure enough, the Rainsport 3s are down to about 3mm and have covered 38k km since Sept 2017. Does anyone have any recommendations for a decent set of tyres for the rear? I'm thinking about Hankooks, as they have performed well up front and still have lots of thread left. I will be switching over to my winter wheels shortly so I'm not in a rush.

Shane - I put the RS5's on the back of the 530i (on 17's) last winter and have found them very good. They're fairly quiet, great in the wet, no complaints in the dry and most importantly they overcame my only criticism of the RS3's in terms of being a little soft on the sidewall. That improvement didn't come at the expense of comfort, still very good on that score. Not the usual amount of mileage on them so far because of the effects of restrictions over the course of the year but still a decent few thousand.

If you're still happy with the RS3's overall by the end then I think you'll find the 5's are more of the same +.

I put a new set of Hankook Ventus Evo3 on the e39 a few weeks back. Have been through several sets on various cars and find them excellent. Probably won’t match Conti or Michelin for lap times but for real world driving they offer great balance between cost/grip/noise/durability.
