Question for any of the resident E39 Gurus on here. what are the pros and cons of having one of these as a daily? I was considering a petrol also but I can claim vat back on Diesel? Is there any good well minded examples left out there for sale? Ideally I would like a 03 high spec model, leather interior (not grey) sat nav, manual, exterior color silver,avus blau or black. I'm willing to hold out for the right car budget of €5,000 which I think is reasonable.
525d's are scarce very scarce most are low spec , you'd have a lot better chance comimg across a high spec 530d sport make a great daily they have bags of torque great for long hauls or nipping in and out of traffic although around the city mpg can be nearly as low the petrol equivalent fairly reliable and robust car main cause of concern are swirl flaps (not sure if manual had them) just get them sorted immediately if you do buy
5k should buy a good e39 theres not many even above 4k so you could put the extra into some suspension or something along them lines I wouldn't get too hung up on the sat nav its very dated at this stage being close to 15 years old
I have done about 100k between my 3 525d's.
They're actually a pretty cheap car to own, the road tax on the 2.5 isn't too bad at 1220 euro if paying quarterly.
It's very light on fuel, running well it should return a long term average of 40mpg +
it's very comfortable, I still haven't remapped mine yet but it's capable in standard form.
I have OEM m5 wheels so tyres suck, usually about 900 for the 4. I get about 20k from the fronts, 10k from the rears.
You will really struggle to find a tidy one.
Budget a suspension refresh, it costs about 2.5k. mcung has itemised everything that needs doing in his thread.
Injectors will eventually go, they cost about 200 each to recondition. Manuals don't have EGR coolers or swirl flaps.
I wouldn't bother looking in Ireland.
