    318Ci M43 Head gasket failure.

    Hi folks,

I have ran into a bit of difficulty with my e46, its showing the early signs of HG failure, mayonnaise on oil cap and dip stick & bubbles in expansion tank. Never over heated or ran without coolant I think its just age a 150k miles. I know its not worth much but I want to try keep it alive. Plus just replaced coolant system. So im asking would I be better off with a replacement engine or strip and do HG?

Any ideas of Gasket & bolt kit cost? Anything to look out for?

    Thanks

    How's things.

If it was me I would scrap the 1.9 and do a m52tu/m54 swap but it's not mine

Best bet is to strip it down and do the HG and C system. No point going at a second hand 1.9 engine. Make more sense to repair what you got.

Ya I was thinking that, could buy one worse than my own. Any idea how much is involved in m52/m54 swap?

From time to time (full driving cars) 323i-m52tu. 320i-m54b22. Pop up for around 500-600e.
If you break the car you could have the conversion standing you under 250e depending on alloys and leather that comes with the car.

    What's involved.
Engine, box, loom out in one lump. Also ecu and ews out.
    Swap over exhausts.
It's straight forward. Id sway 2 men max 2-2.5 days on the ground.
