    E36 318is LSD,

    What are my options?

I presume the easiest to get is an M3 one, But what effect would the different diff ratio have and what else needs changing for it to fit? (Difference between M3 & M3 EVO?)

    And can anyone confirm if a 318i (M43) gearbox will fit straight onto a 318is (M44) ?

A small case would be ideal if you can get one.
M3 diff will work as is (medium case)
Evo will require full rear change. (large case)

Car will be slower due to m3 diffs and lower in the rev range. I have a small case 3.64 in my car and it sits at 3k revs at 60mph and 3.5k revs at 80mph. Acceleration is also improved.

med or large case are easier to find and more resilient than the small case.

Also the gear box should bolt straight on. Lads even run 316i boxes with an IS engine as it's a quicker ratio supposedly.

    RE: E36 318is LSD,

The 3L M3 ratio 3:15 and 3.2L M3 3:23 will kill acceleration on a 318is (3:45) also the cases are different size. Stick with a small case 3:45 LSD or higher if you can get one

    RE: E36 318is LSD,

Also you will have a very hard time getting a small case here but they, along with a variety of different CWP ratios, are available via ebay and the likes.

I'm sure you don't need me to tell you that you'd have to be careful with what you're buying as it maybe clapped out and need a rebuild.

LSD will transform the car though Ross, 100% recommend.

    RE: E36 318is LSD,

That answers that then.... If anyone comes across anything PM me!

Next question, Is a 318i (M43) gearbox the same as a 318is (M44)? The one in my Red Is needs replacing as it jumps out of 3rd at times.

I have a couple of gearboxes for an IS if you're looking for one?

    RE: E36 318is LSD,

In a standard 318is with a 3.45diff ratio first gear should give you 32mph at 6500rpm, In fifth at 60mph it will sit at 2800rpm

With a 3.15(3.0M3) diff fitted, first gear will give you 35mph at 6500rpm, In fifth at 60 it will sit at 2500rpm

All roughly based on 17inch wheels

    RE: E36 318is LSD,

That doesn't sound too bad I think? Is it actually a noticeable difference when driving normally or only when your driving hard?
