Alternator gone - options?

Looks like my battery issue was actually a dodgy alternator. Got a red battery light with my brand new battery toward end of a 150 mile journey.

What are my options now? Assuming I can start it (with or without a jump), is it safe to drive 5-10 miles to a garage?

How much for a replacement alternator + installation?

Could be a DIY if you are handy with the spanners. A lot of the time it's just the brushes in the alternator are worn and can be replaced.

As above, it's relatively easy to refurb an alternator, however there's loads of people out there that specialize in this work and you'd probably be better off letting it to somebody who does this in their sleep!
