    Common sense seasonal warning

Lads, felt the need to post this thread. Today alone, I've heard of 2 cars stolen, 1 being a neighbour of a work colleague, where the owner started the car up this morning to de-ice/warm up and went back inside to get a kettle of water/pickup something...30sec jobs... only to come back to an empty driveway. I've now just read it on another forum as well.

Be safe, and dont take the risk and make it easy for your pride and joy to be taken. Get up 5 mins earlier or hang around on the drive for a short while.

It's for this very reason I buy a few cans of de-icer and hand them out to the family as I know they love to ignore this particular warning, 2euro a can in halfords at the moment

Heard of a similar story in the locality too!

Those de-icer cans arent great for the rubbers on wipers and seals, etc, but handy to have if in a rush.
In reality, it only takes a few mins to sit in the car waiting for the screen to clear sufficiently that the wipers can remove the rest....wait the extra 30 seconds than when you are actually tempted to turn them on, as you'll ruin the wipers passing over anything thats still frozen!

When I need to do this I normally start the car but then lock it with the spare key, so its running but locked. I am usually in and out with a luke warm jug of water also to help speed up the process.

Why not pour warm water first, then get in start the car and go? No risk.

That's an option but for me I like to get the heated seats on and the temperature up a little inside so the windows don't fog up while engine warms up and the leather is not ice cold.

+1 never use de icer, a good glass sealant stops ice forming.

Potentially crack glass with the sudden heat difference.
