    M57TU2D30 in M57TUD30 car

    Hi folks,

Thinking about the longevity of my car.

I have a 2004 M57TUD30 530D E60 auto which is running very well at 175k miles and I'm hoping I can bring it to 275k miles - I love it!
I've been told if I look after it there shouldn't be a problem with car hitting that kind of mileage and beyond - apparently taxi cars in Germany are a testament to this!

My question is if the engine does clap out at some stage and I'm faced with a potential engine replacement is it possible to fit an M57TU2D30 173kw 235 PS engine + the newer 6 speed transmission from say a late 2009/2010 E60 auto?

I have read threads on various forums saying it is possible if both the engine and the newer transmission is fitted but I guess I'm looking for opinions from the experienced guys on the forum such as Valdas and Mr. Healy (but welcome comments from anyone with some perspective on this) as to whether it is a viable option.

First off would insurance companies have an issue using an engine and transmission from a facelift car on a preface lift car?
Would they even need to be notified?

I'm guessing if the transmission is used from an LCI car then the electronic gear shift and ECU also needs to be retrofitted?

Finally in terms of man hours/coding problems what other potential problems could there be over sticking with a standard M57TUD30 replacement engine?

Any ideas on the rough cost?

I realise the cheaper option would be to just find an M57TUD30 replacement engine and be done with it but I'd like to know more out of curiosity.

    Cheers all

Its been done both with transmission and gearbox conversion's.But everything depends how deep is your pockets are.It is not a straight bolt on job,so it needs some brains involved too-which where it gets expensive.

    Thanks for the insight auriux330.

I can imagine it's a fierce cost alright.

    Have you done this yourself?

I can't believe there isn't much insight regarding this on the site.

Has anyone actually done the above?

Perhaps if the engine went it would be better to replace with another 218BHP or possibly a 231BHP and keep the existing autobox as I'm fairly certain the 231BHP engine will mate with the box from a 218BHP car?

EDIT - I just read the gearbox is the same between the Pre LCI and LCI 530D - ZF6HP26

    I thought they were different??

Last post here states they are the same except for the electronic gear shift:

Don't you think maybe budgeting for a rebuild would make more sense?

You're talking 13bhp, I'm assuming there might be 20lb ft of torque in the difference?

Oh if that was an option at the time I would 100% go for that but I would have thought replacing a high mileage engine with a younger engine would make more sense no?

The engine is a super engine, powerful and economical but if it clapped out in a few years time (I'm hoping it won't) I was trying to judge if the only type of usable replacement would be the same engine or if the newer M57TU2D30 engines were applicable as they stretch right up to 2010 if you get me?

I don't think it's a big deal to change to the newer engine. I know of an E46 saloon getting an LCI 35d engine fitted, so if that can be done what you're asking should be a cakewalk.

Don't ask me the specifics but I have it in my head that there is some differences in the electrics, but nothing major.

Fully dressed those engines will still fetch pretty big money with low mileage and even then you don't know how it was driven or maintained when it was in use.

Personally I would be much happier knowing the cars original engine had a new lease of life.
