e90 320D engine swap question.

Hello to all!

I'm just curious if anyone can help me with an engine conversion question.

Basically if someone had an E90 320D and wished to convert to a larger engine like a 3lt D or 330 D what are there options keeping it diesel?

Would an engine from an e39 or e46 work or would it be better to get one from an E90 or E60?

What are the pitfalls involved in using the earlier engines? Loom and manifolds?

Also what would the best engine for this conversion be and what would be the engine code?

I think the engine swaps in the older cars was less hassle has there were less electronics on the older models compared to the new, I'd say swapping an engine from an older car to a newer one would be a nightmare + expensive.
Could be 100% wrong though.
