So we all know the dedication Philip puts into keeping his car running well and sounding like it should, the final stages of this was to sort out the outside either by a full out respray costing a few k or a detail for a few 000.

So last week Philip came up from Cork to get it into the shed for some love

How it arrived up from Cork

Bit dull looking here

Car wash pre rinsed using some citrus pre clean and then washed using 2 bucket method. Usual process then of iron cleansing, de-tarring, claying and getting it inside for inspection.

So what we were faced with, 130000 miles and 13 years of driving.

Big thing on Philips mind was preventing the body from rusting in the future so wanted the arches protected, it sounds like a very easy job but it took about 4 hours per arch to be done right.

Basically the arch liners cleaned, detarred and removed and fully cleaned then off the car. Behind the liners is the main area to be clean and degreased prior to the body underseal been applied.

Detarring liners:

Behind the liners before:

Here is where you can see the problem, DAMP build up of road grime and muck sitting penetrating the metal from the inside causing rust to come through, this is on every car by the way not just e39's or not just BMW's

Cleaned down using Surfex HD, for anyone who hasnt used this its by far the best degreaser out there. Cutting into 13 years worth of dirt....

After been undersealed:

Didnt get many pic

Performance brakes:

Some 50/50's
