I love my V10 but I prefer the sound of a V8. Not heard a V12 up close.

V12's are perfectly balanced and therefore their components can be made lighter allowing them to turn faster and therefore make more power.

BMW V12's have always been built for smoothness and longevity so they've never been very 'revvy' hence why they sound like feck all. Although the E63 and F01 760's have managed to let out a better snort than the older V12's.
