It's a 2006, no DPF filter as far as I know (exhaust tip is turned down).
I had it out today on motorway and there was no smell.

I was only talking to someone today that had a 2006 520D that was having exhaust fumes coming into the car, Keary's haven't a clue apparently...

You could have a crack in your exhaust manifold. If you go for a drive so that the engine is hot, park it up with the engine running and open the bonnet. If you can see visible fumes coming up from the left hand side of the engine, then it's definitely a cracked exhaust manifold. I had the same problem on my 2004 530D and it turned out to be that. Expensive job.
