Importing a car from South Africa?

As the title says lads... Has anybody done it? How easy/difficult is it?
I've seen a few yokes from South Africa on donedeal over the years 4 door E36 M3's, E30's and the likes..
Reason I ask is I'm on the look out for an F10..
I stumbled across a South African car sales website and there's some serious spec'd F10's over there.. One in particular, 2011 Alpine white 530d Msport With nearly every conceivable extra 54,000kms. Worked out at just under €22k minus Vrt and shipping fees obviously..
The same car here with that spec would be over the €35,000 mark easily..

I'd it as easy as bringing in a car from Japan?? Or how does it work..

Don't know the finer points, but it should be the same as stuff from Japan. There will be customs duty because its coming from outside the EU, and then VRT, etc. Probably worth having a customs agent take care of that end of things.

22k plus vat and 10% custom's charge means it really isn't worth the hassle! I dont think theres any value when you consider the 8wk shipping time and the fact youre buying a car youve never driven!

Really? So the only upside being that you probably don't have rust to contend with on an older car that and the abundance of sunroofs.

I think I'd get over it for a sunroof

I suppose lacquer peel and faded interior catches up on them too. Still could be worth considering though.

I am a South African and I can tell you it's not worth it unless you find something really special.

Will most likely work out some thing like this :

    Car - €22,000
Ship - €1,000 (no idea of cost from SA to here)
    Import duty - €2,300
    VAT @ 23% - €5,819
    Customs fee - €250

Cost of car excluding VRT - €31,369

There will be other costs like having a vehicle inspection done, NCT, bloody good clean as they get filthy from being on the boats.
