Fixed that for you , I still think this car only has one no housing for a bulb and just off the phone with someone who a had a similar situation with his e46 only one reverse light

2004 facelift E46 coupe here in the family since bought new. 2 reverse lights.

Cheers lads I passed the nct and no light on the dash so this can be laid to rest as I ain't retrofitting a reverse light I'm not that bored

Some E39s are the same too Gar but afaik if you put a bulb holder into it it should work

It might be the first sign of a broken wire in the rubber tubing going from the car to the bootlid. They get brittle with age and cold weather and with repeated bending from opening and closing the boot they crack.
Peel it back from the bootlid side to have a look inside.
