Red face Tyres - Best tyres on the front or rear!?

Interesting read - here and here

Most will know that it's generally best to have your better tyres on the rear, but in a lot of situations, it is more advantageous to have them on the front!!! But in the more critical situations, you'll be thankful they are on the rear!

There's not a whole lot those of use with staggered sets up can do, but obviously its best to rotate the tyres every few 1000 miles

Bought my e39 with nankangs on the rear.
It was lethal in the wet at any speed.
I put vredstein ultrac sessanta on the rear and it has transformed the car.
Will be putting same brand on the front after Christmas.

Likewise had them on the e36 and the e39 great tyre give good feedback and hold well in damp/wet conditions

Really tempted to move from the sessenta to the vorti next if I can get a decent price if not Il be going kumho or toyo as they are good value in a 265 at the moment

Kankook Ventus S1 Evo2's are performing quite well on the E39!

Interesting, but the conclusions probably boil down to common sense. The first link doesn't reference the distinction that being front or rear wheel drive might bring to the appropriate conclusion. The second link does distinguish between front and rear wheel drive but along fairly predictable lines.

Front wheel drive cars are generally biased towards understeer in handling while rear wheel drive bias is towards oversteer. Assuming the other pair aren't shiny threaded garbage then it seems logical to put you best threads on the end that defines the bias in the handling.

Front or rear wheel drive if having to take a sudden avoiding action, I think I'd rather the better tyres on the rear.
Driving style would have a lot to do about it....it's on that will rage on!

I had crap on the back of my e39 and high end tyres at the front.

It was perfect except I found when towing that the rear of the car would tend to slide if braking at speed on long bends. The traction control looked after the rest and I found that the car handled well without a trailer.

Nothing worse than braking hard and having budgets on the front and all that happens is the abs pump goes into overtime.

id prefer having better tyres on the front for steering, loose the back and you can correct it, love the front and its alot harder to regain controll

My car has LingLongs at the moment!
I'v had ABS kick in a few times (Never happened in previous car with Daytons)
Road noise is fucking awful, Honestly can't wait until I find a new set of wheels and put some fresh rubber on.
