I bet if the ABS codes cant be read because the pump its self is at fault.
Some E36s especially 318is has the relay bit built into the pump itself.
What I would do if I was you would be buy a second hand pump (FROM A CAR WITH NO RELAY IN GLOVEBOX!!) a 318is with the same codes written on there.
Its easy to change if you have brake spanners or just buy a set in the pound shop and butcher them so they fit on/over the lines.
Once the pump is swapped, system bled, and the system checks itself the lights will go out.
If you read about the pump being repaired its not really relevant for this scenario that's more for 6cy cars.
    Speaking from personal experience here.
Ok, I definatley don't have a red abs relay in the fuse box,
I will be giving it a service over the weekend I'll have a good look at the module, see if I can get no.s from it.

I haven't a clue Mark, a mate in the trade had that launch system, I took a loan of it for an hour for a play.
I could get into the instrument cluster and the engine control module and read/clear faults, but it wouldn't contact the abs system.
Also, it wouldn't adjust the rear suspension setting on the e39, it looked like it was trying to but it ended up telling me it was in the correct range, even when I exaggerated the measurements.

I will try, I spent a few pennies on a lead and software from bmcables, when they arrive I'll have another look at them.

BTW the lights came back on after about 20miles today.

Has our thanks button gone in the move?

Should have a full set up there off a 318is.
This is my BMW. There are many like it, but this one is mine. My BMW is my best friend. It is my life. I must master it as I must master my life. My BMW, without me, is useless. Without my BMW, I am useless. I must drive my BMW true......
