Had one last week as a courtesy car it was a 152 Bmw 220d luxury edition. i covered nearly 200 miles in it while i had it . pretty nice car to drive . feels very fast, the 2 litre diesel in this produces 190 bhp and in a light car you can really feel it .

The auto box was silky smooth and the adaptable profiles between eco pro / comfort / sport really change the feel of the car massively . eco pro feels crap sport feels reaaly nice .the interior looks good with the mood lighting on the door , overall its a nice place to be although i would say the seats arent overly comfortable , way too firm and it feels narrow although it has loads of head room .

Biggest negative is it doesnt inspire if you come into a corner fast , it feels like a bmw to drive until you throw it into a corner then it feels more like a suv/van . it was a nice courtesy car but i wouldnt buy one unless its mainly city driving you do . although the engine / gearbox is fantastic

Are they worth the premium over an S-Max or similar?

They are fwd with the option of 4wd also. Probably not so much of high importance on a mummy wagon though.

i honestly doubt it . all they have over the s max or equivalent is power , a nicer interior and a Badge. youd really want to want one ,

Not much of a premium only 3k in it iv zero interest in a fwd mini van but if I did I know I'd prefer the bmw over the Ford

maybe not a massive price difference but a big difference in size and practicality . and honestly the seats in the 2 series are uncomfortable, way too firm
the 2 series is more comparable in size to a ford c max which start at €25k

PS:thats an Active tourer not a grand tourer near enough same price though i think
