E34 540 Emergency auto box release

    Hi all,

Does anyone know the procedure to trick the car into thinking its in P? My auto box is stuck in R and it won't turn the engine. I've heard there's a wire to cross and the car thinks it's in P all of the time.

The car doesn't need to drive, just start up.

I should also say, the cars not actually in R, I have the box moving freely, it's just not telling the electronics

Keith, I'm not to sure which wires need crossing unfortunately. However if you check the range selector, figure 9, under the gear selector surround and check the connections which may be burnt, melted or slightly corroded, as this happen on mine and a bit of a clean got me going again. Dose the gear indicator on the dash change when you move through the gears?

I brought home the diagnostics and plugged in. Live data shows its in P when lever is in P and changed through gears. Now I've switched to immobiliser as the cause. Should have answers by Sunday, maybe even friday

Also, I had no display on dash for miles or gears so couldn't tell.
