Liking this a lot not so much its looks but what its packing from its 2.0 lump 300bhp 4wd and returns 40mpg right little pocket rocket €575 for a years tax too

With the Frankfurt motor show less than three weeks away, new car reveals are coming in thick and fast at the moment. Besides yesterday's*458 Speciale, one of the more interesting cars revealed thus far is probably the new VW Golf R. This is because it a) looks rather cool, b) has 300bhp and four wheel drive, and c) will be relatively affordable (potentially a touch under £30k).Essentially, the Golf R is an Audi S3 in a VW skin. It has the same platform, and the same engine, along with identical power figures. That means it has 296bhp from a 2.0 litre four-cylinder turbocharged engine (which, I must note, sounds rather good in the S3). That power is then sent to the road via a Haldex four wheel drive system, much like the Audi, and helps get the hatchback to 62mph in a Porsche-beating 4.9 seconds (with the DSG 'box, at least). And also like the S3, the new Golf R will be rather economical, with a combined rating of 40.9mpg for the DSG model. Though it hardly has to be said that you'll manage to get nowhere near that if you're driving it as you should.Visually, the Golf R is distinguished from the lesser GTI model thought quad tailpipes at the back, new side sills, and a new front bumper design. A further reduction in ride height over the GTI is probably not visually noticeable (it's only 5mm), but that should help the R to handle even better.Look for more images when the car makes its 'official' debut at the Frankfurt show.
