How does one insure a jeep for commercial use if your not VAT registered?
Pretty sure you need to register as a sole trader.

I think it varies from one insurance company to the next. Also from a commercial tax point of view different local authorities have different approaches.

Alternatively tell them you don't have to register for VAT until you sell Eur75,000 worth of goods in any one year. And as you're starting to trade it'll be a while before you get to that level.

Clearly my post was written based on the assumption that an individual had completed the required TR1 form to register as a sole trader http://www.revenue.ie/en/business/ru....html#section2
and if they were to provide such a vat number it was on the condition that final confirmation of a vat number was about to be issued by Revenue :=)
