    Recommend e36 tool for obd

    Hi guys looking for a tool for scan/activation of of settings etc etc on the e36,,according to marks post on. Diagnostics I need an serial port laptop ,question is is there the same version for usb or do I need the serial port version full stop??.

    I want to be able to scan the whole car from individual sensors to all over scans kinda dealer level stuff

    For all the modules the only real option is DIS, INPA and you need the ADS cable which as you rightly remember requires a serial cable. The E36 uses "L Line" protocol and despite lots of searching I haven't found a way around the serial port problem.

    Thanks Mark I was onto cable shack and they said the same ,,so I think I'll source a laptop first and go from there

    That should sort you, I used it for INPA with my E36, in fact I've the cables somewhere around too. Couldnt see any reason for a physical serial port, those cables do usb-serial anyway. I was primarily interested in ECU codes, so not 100% on all the modules.
