Yeah alan, you sound like me with the X5...costly motors.

On a side note, I think BMW (and a lot of other manufacturers) had a real issue with reliability in the 2004 - 2010ish era. Every car I owned from that eara had all these "know issues" like injector failures, throttle body failures, IMS bearing failures etc. Seems to me F generation BMW is much more reliable. I simply would not put up with all the hassle of the X5 again, even with a warranty, the time to book repairs, go there get a loaner, get back etc is a waste of time.

X5 is a good car to drive, but a Pain in the arse to own.
